Molly Shore was right, this place is pretty much exactly like an armpit. Sweaty and smelly and I dont' think i'm going to make it. Everything sucks right now. Robin and I were driven all over hells half acre by a tuk tuk driver trying to get us to buy cheap crap. They really won't take no for an answer. I'm fairly certain that everyone in Thailand just wants to rip me off. I'm sweaty and homesick and tired and I just want to go home, but I can't. I'm not going to let myself go home. If Thailand still sucks in month then I get to go home.

I think we're going to head for Chiang Mai tomorrow I guess. Sweet Jesus, even the thought of leaving the security of the guest house behind is making me sick. What the hell am I doing here. Bangkok is not for the faint of heart, and unfortunately that's exactly the category I fall into. How can anybody live here, let alone like it? I need to get out. I guess.

I guess all I need is a little encouragement. Fuck.

Maybe it will get better before I get malaria, or rabies, or any kind of parasite.

Maybe you just need to start smelling like an armpit. You know, blend in a little.

Come and see me in N.Z. It's cold, clammy and painfully british but delightfully disease free. Unfortunately you'll have to come and see me in the next ten days. If you can't muster that degree of spontaneity, i'm sure Thailand will prove more endurable once you flee Bangkok. Reginally yours, paul

on bangkok
don't worry, everything is better when you're not in that stinkhole city. are you staying on khao san road? cause that also doesn't help. if you end up not liking other places in thailand, i recommend laos. it's a pretty safe place and you don't feel so much like a walking sack of dollah dollah bills . buck up. bangkok is suckier than everywhere else.

Some Southeast Asian Tips
Perhaps it's because we spent three months in Cambodia before getting to anywhere remotely first world that we don't have the same opinion of Bangkok. It's our refuge. Yes, it's loud and busy and people want your money, but there's also great food, great shopping and tons of stuff to do. Read guide books before going anywhere, take what they say with a grain of salt, and put them away when you're in public. If you look like a backpacker and stay with the backpackers, you'll be treated like a backpacker. Tourism is THE industry there so many often see conning you as the way to their next meal. I know that here in Phnom Penh, the backpacker district is the grottiest, dodgiest, sketchiest, most disgusting pit to stay in. If you stay away from it, though, you meet people who aren't offering you drugs or a lady for the night and you can have a good time with genuinely kind people. For the true low down on places to stay, go to www.travelfish.org . I updated their Phnom Penh section and I know Thailand is current. Wear bug spray and you won't get malaria. Don't tease the monkeys and you won't get rabies. And you will get a parasite no matter what you do, but you'll get over it with some cheap anti-biotics. Hope it gets better. Just think how cold you would be if you went home!

hahaha! i had a man try and sell me a hammock while i was sleeping in one. he didn't seem to care that i already had one and obviously didn't need one. hang in there it gets better once you get more comfortable and don;t stick out like a sore thumb and every person seems like they're trying to sell yo something. get out of the big city and never ever under any circumstance go to phuket.
