Today we visited the Medoc, which is that part of the Bordeaux region west of the Dordogne River. We have learned that wines produced on the east bank are predominantly Merlot-based, as this grape does best in the clay soils on the east bank. On the other hand, Cabernet Sauvignon does better in the gravels in the Medoc, and Medoc wines are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. As we much prefer Cabernet over Merlot, we were keen to visit the Medoc.
We started our visit to the area in the little town of Saint-Estephe. We sampled a few wines at the local Maison de Vin, and they suggested some wineries we could visit. We had a coffee in Saint-Estephe, and headed off for a tour and tasting at Chateau Le Crock. Unfortunately, this Chateau has seen better days, and again their wines were a little too heavy in Merlot for our taste. It may be that this Chateau's sister, Chateau Leoville Poyferre, which has a prestigious classification, produces a better quality product.
We headed off to the lovely little seaside town of Pauillac, where we had a light lunch. We then headed south to the Chateau Haut Breton. Our hostess, Marie, gave
us a very informative tour of the facility, followed by a sampling of their wines. Their better quality wine is heavy to Cabernet, much more to Jim's taste.
We then drove on to the port of Lamarque, where we caught a ferry for the 20 minute crossing of the Garonne River to Blaye. We then drove along the banks of the river, back to Libourne and Saint-Pey-de-Castets.

Love the country side, I think I could be that window cleaner......thanks for letting us be apart of your trip. but with all those stairs you'll be staying in shape.
