It was another brilliantly sunny day in Dublin (really . . . couldn't make this up), perfect for a self-guided walking tour of the city.

The Cassidy Hotel is about a 10-minute walk north of the River Liffey, So, after breakfast we headed over the river for art, architecture, tarts, and ale. First, to Trinity College and the Book of Kells. Jack, a 3rd year student at Trinity was our guide for a tour through the campus of the largest university in Ireland -- and a top 50 university in the world. He seemed quite proud of two Oregon maples near the bell tower, including the largest and oldest one in Europe, and was pleased to have two Oregonians in his tour group. The tour ended at the Old Library where the Book of Kells, an intricately illustrated and hand-written 'illuminated' manuscript of the first four gospels over 1000 years old, is on exhibit. Incredible.

While there, did a quick family name history search and found that Sharon's Glennon clan came from the region around County Meath west of Dublin. Cool!

Next, onto St. Patrick's Cathedral and park, Christ Church Cathedral, lousy fish and great chips, desserts at Queen of Tarts --

best bread pudding and berrry crumble ever -- and the Stag's Head Pub for a day topper, a Kilkenny Irish red ale for Mike and a Bulmer's hard cider for Sharon. That ale was a loovley beeh!

An altogether spectacular day . . . until we got back to the hotel and learned that a nationwide taxi strike begins at 5:00 am tomorrow morning, five hours BEFORE we're supposed to go and pick up our rental car for the rest of the time in Ireland. So, guess who's going for a long walk in the morning to pick up the rental?

Tomorrow, onto the medieval city of Kilkenny and its castle.

Sla'n! (Bye!)

Sounds like a great adventure. It seems that you will not starve. Hopefully you'll be able to get to your rental ok. If it's a long walk, you'll have to stop for refreshment along the thirsty way. Can't wait to hear more about the Glenn
on find.
