Flights to Santiago and then on to Puerto Montt. We apparently flew over the volcano that erupted 2 days ago, not much activity though so may have calmed down. Did not manage to get a photo due to the child in the window seat upending her orange juice all over her table, brother and self. Chris was getting as many napkins for her to mop up the mess. There were people all standing and moving to windows to get photos, somehow the plane did not tip over.Arrived at our hotel which is in Puerto Varas and minutes from Lago (lake) Llanquihue and Mount Orsono (pointy volcano) This is one stunning site. We decide to walk into the main centre which is mainly hotels, restaurants and tourists from across the world. We need to purchase some decent windbreakers which we find for 115,000 peso ($253) think we are really going to need them in Patagonia. In the evening we find a great restaurant called Bravo Cabrera which quickly fills. The staff are fantastic and the barman gives us a free Papaya pisco sour. Yum! Think we may go back.So today is hiking day with a nice reasonable 9am start. Our guide Carlos arrives on time and advises that the driver should be here in 5. We are told that there is a large bushfire near Puerto Montt which is impacting on traffic. He decides to take an alternate route, and then another and another. After 90minutes it's decided that we just ain't gonna make it as all three routes now have tailbacks of around 20km. WTF!We tell Carlos that we are happy to go back to town as there is plenty that we can do there and we understand that it's not his fault. At least we got to see some of the forests and countryside which is a vast difference to the Atacama. You could almost believe that you were in the south west of WA. There are even eucalyptus trees here which will not aid the fire at all.The architecture in this part of Chile is so different to the north. Timber and iron as opposed to Adobe bricks. It's a real mix of European architecture. Yet more dogs , even one in a phone box. Coffee time at cafe Mawen.Tomorrow we go white water rafting.
