Well we missed Windjana Gorge as it rained and they closed the roads for a couple of days and we didn't want to miss our flight later in the week. We stayed in Fitzroy Crossing for another couple of days and then went onto Derby 2 days early.
Derby is a great country town. We saw the Prison Tree which is said to be about 1500 years old. The town has created a wet lands from the waste water recycling and we decided we weren't going to have any duck for tea as there were thousands there. The sunsets were great.
We checked out Myall's Bore and cattle trough which is 120 meters long. Italy may have the leaning tower of Pisa but Australia has the leaning Boab of Derby ha ha who needs to travel overseas. We took a walk through the Pioneer Cemetery and came across the oldest person to have lived in Australia. Derby fishing club had mud crab races which was a hoot. David bought a crab (donation of $10) and was in the first race. His darn crab did not move...must have been dead to start with....not really, they were all alive his was just too
lazy.
One day saw us chasing the tide most of the day as it is a fair way to the jetty due to Derby being built along mud flats. The tide that day rose 10.61 meters as you can see by the pics that was a lot.
We checked out the roo tails in the freezer of the local supermarket....$13 each and next to that was a frozen rabbit for $28. The roo tails disappear quick so no photo yet.
Our last day in Derby saw us board a plane to the Horizontal Falls. Hooly bloody dooly what a great day. We boarded the plane and headed out to the Horizontal Falls about 40 minutes away. Once we landed we were straight onto the small jet boat and through the falls we went. These amazing falls are created by the tide and can fall/rise by 11 meters. Back on the houseboats which they have moored permanently there for the season and we went into the swim cage with the sharks circling around us. Back into the boat for a cruise up the creeks and through the mangroves trying to find crocs but they were being shy and didn't appear. Back to the houseboat
for lunch then into the jet boat again to see the tide actually stop flowing through the falls and reverse flow begin. Amazing.
The day finally came to an end with us back on the plane and taking a scenic route home although David kept watching the control panel in the plane as the low fuel lights kept flashing. Thankfully we made it back (about 3 pm) with a sniff of fuel left and the fuel tanker next to the runway to refuel the plane. The poor pilot still had 2 more flights to go and he had been up since 3 am.
We are now off to Broome to see some more sights.
Hope you enjoy the pictures, it was a difficult choice this time as we have so many now.
Catch you next time.
