Punta Arenas

Alarm went off at 5.45. Today we are anchored in Punta Arenas (130,000 inhabitants)- we can see the town on our port side when we draw back the curtains. Quick shower and breakfast before collecting our sticker (number 3) from the excursions team for our adventure to see the Magdelena island penguins. We have a delay as the sea is not behaving well and the tenders are being thrown around a bit. Within 20 minutes this changed and we joined the 3's and 4's to shore. A coach takes us 5 minutes to the ferry port - the guide tells us that although it's summertime we are extremely lucky to have clear blue skies and sunshine as the weather is unpredictable and the area is renowned for having four seasons in one day. An hour on the ferry and we see whales for the first time in the wild. Another hour and we're on the island which is a penguin reserve. There were thousands of penguin families with their babies sleeping in their holes or swimming in the sea, along with lots of other bird species. We walked up to the lighthouse and back to the ferry taking hundreds of photos. We chose a seat near the back of the boat to eat our packed lunch provided by the cruise, but had an argument with a lady who sat there on the way out so believed it was hers. Anyway, we stuck to our guns, much to her disgust! A bit of confrontation adds to the excitement! Back on land, the coach dropped us off at the main square in Punta Arenas and we walked four blocks back to the port. We were thirsty and hungry so dropped our bags in the room and went and had a cold drink and spaghetti bolognese followed by a coffee overlooking the bay where further tenders are arriving.
