Water, water, water

Really just a one day report of a trip to Niagara falls. Having spent the morning catching up on e-mails and this blog we set out about 11 for Niagara, about 25 miles away. Peter managed not to spot the sign indicating the speed limit had dropped from 65 to 55 (nothing else seemed to slow down) and found himself being pulled overby a policeman. The policeman seemed a little crestfallen when a UK licence was produced and handed over a summons - which couldn't cope with UK postcodes - and grudgingly admitted it was all pretty meaningless.
Never-the-less we proceeded at a more moderate pace to Niagara where we joined a tour round the attractions, the highlights of which were the elevator ride and boardwalk near the bottom of the American Falls and the ride on the Maid of the Mist boat which goes to within 150 feet of the bottom of the canadian falls. You get issued with plastic ponchos in both places - but the spray is like the heaviest rainstorm so inevitably you get pretty damp.
back at Yvette's house tonight - more Turkey for dinner - and then into Canada tomorrow and two nights at Liz's uncles near Toronto.

Fun picture of you getting soaked, Liz! And the last one, just of the falls, reminds me of that 19th-century movement in art to show the "sublime" in nature -- the "terrible made beautiful," as the literary critic Lionel Trilling called it
. I've only seen the falls from the U.S. side; someday I will make sure I go on the "Maid of the Mist."
