Searching for a small area off the beaten path leads to an intermittent gravel and paved winding road upwards to Rainbow Beach. In town there is a large military presence, as the community held a morning ceremony for Anzac Day (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps) to honour soldiers that fought in Gallipoli. Wreaths are laid with local flowers at the war memorial.
Captain Cook founded the area in 1770. This town was formed originally for the sand mining industry. Two blocks from Debbie's Place means daily walks on this beautiful isolated beach with spectacular dunes radiating with 40 different colours of sand exposed in the cliff walls. The variety of colours are caused by iron oxide deposits. A slice of paradise.
Watching vehicles driving on the beach is irresistible, and proves to be a blast. Walking through the brush a walkway will bring you to the Carlo Sandblow; a magnificent dune site with multiple viewpoints and a feeling that you are on top of the world. Two young couples have erected a tent smack dab in the center of the sand for the day to provide shelter and cooking capabilities.
Dozens of varied bird squawks, chirps, and
songs are heard 24/7. Chris plays a raven call on his phone and we laugh as one raven responds. The sun setting at Carlo Point is serene and vibrant. Day is done.
Now heading north to Cairns and Port Douglas. The journey continues!
