We've decided that we prefer northern Italy (Tuscany area) to the south. The rugged terrain of the Amalfi area makes it incredibly difficult to move between places. Positano is only 8 kilometers from Sorrento and it took us almost 2 hours to get there. (Of course, our hotel is 9 kilometers from Sorrento.) Part of that is due to waiting for the Sita (a.k.a. wheeled sardine cans). One comes but doesn't stop because it's full. So we wait for another opportunity. This is the slow season, we can't imagine what this is like during the summer!

Anyway, the roller coaster ride to Positano is about the same as any two-laner in the Colorado mountains, except there are no pull-offs or truck run-away ramps. The road is probably narrower than in Colorado, which makes the buses seem too big for the road.

The Positano bus stop is probably midway up the mountain. We hiked down switchback roads trying not to think of getting back up for the return bus. Surely a bottle of Prosecco will help! This was kind of a crabby day for us, so we likely didn't fully enjoy the beauty that Positano offers.

We found a lovely ristorànte on the cliff and enjoyed mussels, clams, tuna, sardines in a spicey pasta sauce with incredible panni (bread.) We ordered Prosecco, but think we really got Spumante. It didn't matter because it was all too good.

Our descent continued past a million shops, finally ending at the beach. The aqua water was beautiful - it felt good to sit on the warm rocks, soaking in the sun.

The Amalfi is the limone area for Italy. Huge and plentiful, they are served with everything. The flavor of a freshly picked limone is undescribable. Even the cut seed displayed the green sprout for a new tree.

We had to finally face the hike back up to the bus stop. We found a shortcut, but was still a difficult climb. Fortunately, there weren't many steps -- just the inclined switchback road. Then, we waited 1.5 hours for a bus that wasn't full. Luckily for our crabby selves, it was one that stopped at our hotel on the way down to Sorrento, so we didn't have to take another bus back up to our hotel.

It was good to have dinner at Lo Stuzzichino that night.

Fantastic trip!
I know you're having a wonderful time despite some crazy days. Just remember, you're no in MN and not at work. BTW-I'm ready for you to come back ;) I love reading about your trip. Your pictures in Venezia bring back memories of my trip there in '96. I"m glad to see it's still afloat. I hope you enjoy the last few days of your trip! -Sally
