Well, 2000kms later we have finally reached the northern part of the South Island and have settled in for a 4 night stay at our Nelson hotel.
The sun finally came out for some of our drive from Franz Josef to Christchurch through lots more awesome scenery! About half way we enjoyed a picnic lunch after a 30 minute steep walk up to the Devil's Punchbowl Falls in Arthurs Pass National Park. And we saw our first kea in the village - very cheeky wild parrot nicking peoples' sandwiches.
However by the time we reached the outskirts of Christchurch it was raining, but luckily the next day was much drier when we took a Rebuild Tour - amazing to see how the city is being put back together again. We also managed to do a lovely later afternoon walk in the hills behind Sumner, the coastal suburb where we were staying.
The cloud and drizzle had not gone away but we appreciated more stunning scenery on our way to Nelson yesterday. Today we did a lot of exploring around the town going first to the Saturday market, then a climb up to the so called Trig Centre of

Shopping experience created from shipping containersNZ, followed by a visit to the impressive Anglican Cathedral.
The forecast is for more of the same weather for the next couple of days, should we have stayed in England?!? But we will not let it stop us and will be off cycling the Tasman Great Taste Trail tomorrow which includes plenty of wine tasting along the way and then a big cruise and tramp up the Abel Tasman National Park on Monday.
