Whitehaven Beach
Spoilt only by some idiot who got into the photo 12 October, Thursday... After our riveting, boozy evening last night we decided to cook up the remaining saucissons on the barbie for breakfast... hot dogs for breakfast, I really would recommend it. It took Dave's mind off his swollen ankle that he'd managed to gain last night and gave us all the fatty energy boost we needed to continue with the day. Didn't do too much in the morning other than check interweb and stock up on booze for our sailing trip in the Whitsundays. The afternoon was more exciting, however, as we boarded the Clipper boat for the start of our wonderful three day tour of the Whitsundays. We sailed out to the islands, took in some scenery and sunshine. Chatted and played cards for what seemed like an eternity while we drank some fruity lexia from a box. What a lovely evening. Time to retire I think.
13 October, Friday... Our only full day in the Whitsundays. We got to check out Whitehaven beach, which is a purely fantastic beach. Clear water, white sand and goes on for about as far as the eye can see. If you search for Whitsundays on the interweb this is probably the
picture you'll find (I can't be bothered to upload photos today). Blues and whites everywhere and a stingray swimming about in the water then all to soon time to leave and get back on the boat for some more sailing. We sailed out to a Bay called Luncheon Bay where not only did we have lunch but also got to do some snorkelling where there were some excellent corals and fish to see. After getting a bit chilly from all the floating about in our stylish 'stinger suits' (actually just a wet suit but should keep the jellyfish out) we headed back to the boat for some food, to check out the sunset, play some cards and chat. After dinner the birthday celebrations started, some irish guy and one of the Katy's from Bournemouth. After some amusing shennanigans with balloons shaped like genitalia hardcore drinking commenced and much of the evening is either forgotten or not repeatable. Great fun.
14 October, Saturday... Everyone woke up nice and hungover this morning. Some would even announce they would never drink again. Four canadian guys also on the boat got stuck into their remaining beers for breakfast and we got to go
snokelling again. A very quick snorkel this time due to 'illness' on my part and poor visibility underwater. Then it began to rain, super. Back to the boat for lunch and a slow trip back to port for everyone to recoever. At least the rain let up and we could sunbathe out on deck. The rest of the day was rather uneventful until Dave had to leave us at 6pm (we had a farewell dinner of fish and chips) to catch a bus then a plane then a plane back to London. Thoroughly distraught we went to bed early and cried while watching the Dukes of Hazzard.
15 October, Sunday... Time to hit the road and more goodbyes, this time the Katy's were heading back down the coast while Thomas and myself would continue north. We left for Townsville, sat on the beach there for a while then headed up to Mission Beach after deciding we couldn't afford a trip to Magnetic Island and that Townsville was rubbish (although probably more to do with Dave taking the good travel guide home with him). Mission Beach was super quiet and we realised Townsville might have been a bit more lively
Whitehaven Beach
Spoilt only by some idiot who got into the photo than we first thought in the evening. Oh well, tinned curry and rice for dinner before sleeping. And not a single Cassowary spotted on the road despite all the warning signs. I'm very dissappointed with the lack of Australian wildlife (alive, not roadkill - plenty of that about) and starting to think I may need to head to a zoo to see a koala.
16 October, Monday... Mission Beach... sat on the beach for a while, super hot here, I guess we really are in the tropics now. Stayed at the beach all morning until we got too hot and hungry and went to get lunch. Deciding that we weren't going to do to much else here we headed further north to Cairns which would become the end of our journey, but not right away. Sydney to Cairns in record time (about 19 days). We booked ourselves onto a dive course at great cost, two of Thom's cards rejected when trying to pay, but it sounds like great fun. We'll be living onboard another boat for 3 days from Wednesday doing about 11 dives, can't wait.
