The Oktoberfest

Wow, where to start. It's like a Disneyland for adults ;-)

The festival lasts for 16 days and besides the 14 or so beer tents, there are hundreds of side shows, food stalls, carnival rides, shops, etc. It was one big party. Many of the locals were in traditional costume, and apparently they even turn up to work in that during the festival season.

While there was obviously a lot of drinking happening (the internet says an average of 6 million litres of beer is drunk in that 16 days), the crowds weren't unruly and everyone seemed to be in the best spirits! I didn't see any aggro the whole night.

Before entering one of the beer tents, we all lined our stomachs with a 1/2m hot dog. We made our way to the Hofbräu tent (as it is one of the few that doesn't mind foreigners in it). It was chaos inside. There were so many people, all waving their 1litre beer glasses and singing along with the German Oompah band which played a mixture of pop, drinking, and German songs. Try and imagine everyone singing "It's Raining Men" in every European and Antipodean accent available!

There was definitely a large contingency of Aussies, Kiwis and Italians, although we did get to meet a few Germans too. We were lucky to meet a group of Germans who let us park at their table. We had been warned to avoid the Pig Pen, but low-and-behold, that's where we ended up. The Pig Pen is infamous for it's very merry occupants who seem to have a thing for stealing underwear and launching it up to the big Angel floating up above. We came off relatively unscavved, although Kristy ended up donating her bra (nice work!!).

Each table has it's own Serving Girls - and yes they can carry 6 or more steins (or Mass's as they are called)!! Ours was good value and kept us fully topped up with beer all night. I'm proud to say that I managed 3 Mass!! Not bad for me ;-)

The night was fantastic, and I'm already organising my trip for next years!

BTW Check out the video attached to this blog to give you an idea of the atmosphere here!
I'm already planning on going again next year, so if you want to come along, let me know :-)
