We had our first day in Rome yesterday, and then a bit today so far. Yesterday, after taking a morning train from Florence and getting to the hostel, we walked around to some of the sites that aren't really organized for tourism or cost money, like the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Piazza Novona (Bernini's Fountain of Four Rivers, which you may remember from Angels and Demons), and the Pantheom (also from Angels and Demons). That was about it for yesterday. We had a good dinner on a street cafe (a lot of Italian restaurants have this fixed menu for a reasonable price of about 11 to 13 euro where you get 2 courses with dessert and maybe wine or some drink included), which was really really good, and then went back to the hostel, showered, dropped off laundry at a laundromat, and went to a pub at one of the other hostels that owns this one and watched a really intense soccer match (football here). This hostel is really nice. Although we have to go to bathrooms down the hall again and there are 10 people to a room, its very clean and the staff is really nice, so its worth it. And its not even that expensive (20 euro a night).

Today we had a tour that was given by our hostel around the ancient part of the city (Roman Forum, Colliseum, Circus Maximus, etc), which was cool since we got some history behind the ruins instead of just wandering around aimlessly. I already knew a bit of the history or at least names of what certain structures were, but it was good to hear the history of it all over again. No one wanted to go into the Colliseum, so we didn't (I have already been in there, and its quite expensive for not seeing too much - 8 euro). We were going to go to the Vatican today, but it was closed for Corpus Christi Day or something, which was lame, so we are going to try to do that in the morning before we leave on Saturday for the Cinque Terre.

The Pope is giving mass tonight in a part of Rome, so we might go, but it is always an absolute mob apparently, so we might not see anything at all if we show up, and I might feel a bit out of place not being Catholic and receving communion from the Pope. We'll see what everyone else is thinking later tonight.

Tomorrow we are going to Pompeii, which will probably take most of the day.
