Lake Ngaroto is not the most beautiful lake I have ever seen, but it is a good place to stop if you want a scenic walk (90 minutes) or just need a break somewhere off the beaten track.

The link above will give you basic information about the lake. I know everyone Googles everything today so I will try to add some basic advice and photos.

Situated north of Te Awamutu, it is easy to find BUT the turn-off is just past a bend in the road and I have managed to drive right past it every time!

You may find people fishing and wonder what on earth could be worth catching in the lake. Unfortunately, because the lake discharges into the Waipa River, any unwanted species of fish in the river can make their way into the lake. These unfortunately include koi carp and catfish. I would like to thank the nice men from the University of Waikato for this information. They have just begun research into food webs in the lake so you may be lucky enough to see them at work.

Tips: A good back road if you want to travel through typical Waikato countryside, rather than the main road. After your visit, continue on and do a detour to Pirongia before back-tracking and heading to Hamilton.

Geocaches: Yes, there is a geocache here. I find it strange there is only 1 and it is an easy one. Hint: overseas visitors may need to google the type of tree they are looking for.

Dogs: Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead to keep the plentiful wildlife safe.

Swimming: the signs say 'No swimming' and they mean it. It is not safe due to algae. I wouldn't even try to paddle in it.
