On the way to the tour.........
We went on a walking tour of Old Chengdu with some of the Chinese students, six of them in total. They looked more excited to see their own city then we did! It was a forty minute bus trip to our location and on the way three of our bags almost got pick-pocketed. It was a real wake up call to always be aware of your possessions in a place like China where there are so many people. Once we arrived, almost half of the people on the bus thought it would be a good idea to try and pile out the door all at once. This was extremely entertaining for the many other people on the bus.

We met our tour guide, a local woman in her late 20s. She was extremely good at English and was very knowledgeable, but she couldn’t tell us much about the city in fine detail which we expected because of how much has happened here in the last few centuries. She gave us some listening devices which look like something you would see in a spy movie. She talked through a small microphone so that we could use the devices to hear her over the noise of the city. First she took us down the main street, where she talked about the history. She took us to the old American Embassy so that we could see the classic style of Chinese building.

She then took us to a very poor part of the city, but it was still amazing to see how these people lived. It was also amazing to see the new and the old, the rich and the poor living so close to one another. We ate lunch at a small corner restaurant which is famous in Chengdu for its noodles. Lunch was amazing and not too spicy. We headed back to our starting point and on the way she took us through the middle of a massive shopping street mall with shops on each side for hundreds of metres. We met our teacher, took a few photos and then took the bus back to school. It was a great day overall with amazing sights, great smells and awesome people.
