After a bit of a wander this morning, we bump into the chairperson for the Onemana Ratepayers Association. Very handy when you want to know any secret gems in the area. 1
st gem is a walk around the Lakes. Yes they have Lakes (actually I would probably say ponds, not particularly appealing ponds however). This is a short walk from behind the shops at Onemana. The Locals have lovingly built and planted this track for all to enjoy. If you have a spare 15 minutes or need to walk off your ice cream this could be an option. But don’t expect too much. The 2
ndgem recommended is however a must…….Pokohino Bay. As you head out of Onemana and reach the top of the hill, take the forestry road to the right (If the gate is shut, just push it open😊). Then travel about 5kms down a gravel road till you get to the carpark at the end. From here there is a 20 minute walk on a relatively steep track down to Pokohino Bay. This is a stunning sheltered cove that you will not want to leave, so make sure you pack a picnic and enjoy.
We head further South
to Whangamata for lunch. Parking up on the harbour edge and enjoying the beautiful view. Whangamata has a lovely harbour, Marina and of course is a very popular surf beach. This place is nice but not somewhere you would want to be in the holiday period when the hordes of holidaymakers converge on the area.
South from Whangamata is the Wentworth Valley Falls. The carpark is at the end of Wentworth Valley Road and DOC camp. The walk to the Falls lookout is what I would call easy and takes about 45-50 minutes. The track runs along the edge of the river and through attractive bush, with a couple of bridges to cross along the way. Wentworth Valley Falls are about 50 metres high. The falls are tiered with the 1
st pool about ¾’s of the way up then a further drop down to the bottom pool. There is an option to scramble down from the lookout to the pool at the bottom (popular for swimmers), but today we opt to take the track up to the top of the Falls. I tried to con Lance into taking a seat next to me on the edge of the falls
at the top, but he declined. This track is in fantastic condition and would make an excellent running track.
Last stop for the day is Waihi Beach and time to catch-up with family.
Day 138 – 142
The last few days have been spent with family and friends. We have spent a couple of nights at Waihi Beach and of course celebrating the Mighty All Blacks win😊. Some restful time spent at the beautiful Tanners Point watching the boats come and go. Now we are just chilling in Katikati catching up with Mum and Dad.
