An emergency meeting was called following Wendy’s singular failure to find the ideal gateau and ideal location to eat the aforementioned gateau. This confused both Cusco and myself, as we were of the opinion that one merely had one’s cake and ate it – hmmm…that could become a well used phrase methinks, similar to “ you can take a horse to water, but not make a pig’s purse from it. “ Apparently, as explained in great detail to us, the location is just as important as the gateau, so we were ordered to pack up and point Claude in the general direction of Heidelberg.

What could be a recurring memory of Heidelburg? Well dear reader, that is a wonderful question which shall be answered with the aid of beer and a peanut butter sandwich. It could be the sight of the majestic castle overlooking the city, or the marvellous cathedral with a tower climbed by W, or the maze of back streets each with their own surprises, or it could be the discovery of the local beer (the best in Germany in my view), indeed it could be many other things but nay, nay and thrice nay dear readers, the residing memory will be of wasps.

Your correspondent would like to point out that he does not refer to WASPs as description of the majority of northern Europe, but the yellow and black , pain inflicting, flying savages that were everywhere in this city. You stopped to cross the road – they were there. You went to the cashpoint – they were there. You went to the library – they were there. You stopped to scratch your ear with your back paw – they were there (this information was provided by our chief Spaniel). I had never seen so many, not since a day many years ago when I had to take action to get rid of a wasp nest outside my front door. An expert on the subject, provided me with some powder to spray in to the nest and that would put an end to them. Sadly, he did not tell me that this had to be done in the middle of the night while the wasps were asleep. Instead, I pumped the powder in during the warmest, sunniest day of the year. Believe me, the sky turned black with a very angry buzzing noise – I fled, far and fast.

I digress. Yes, Heidelberg was infested with them. I was stung twice – once merely because I stepped on one of them and Wendy was stung once – trying to frighten one away, it was so impressed it stung her. Was it all worth it??? Did Wendy get the gateau???? You will have to look at the photographs to find out.

Sadness was starting to set in as our travels around Germany were coming to an end. Soon we would be in France, the land of croissants, pain au chocolats, baguettes, president buerre, cidre, great wines and a bulging waistline but there was time for one more stop and we chose Trier. On the banks of the Moselle, this is probably the oldest city in Germany, the main bridge into the town dates 2 BC. The capital city of most of the Western Roman empire and the birthplace of Karl Marx gave your correspondent plenty to explore, while Cusco merely relaxed by splashing around in the fountains of the Palace of Trier. A fitting end to our German adventure.
