07-30-15 To the Top of the World
The creek really put me to sleep and I didn't wake up til 8 am. By then the sun was up, half of the campground left and I'm still in bed, hooray. While walking Oscar I met a couple from Billings that bought a 1985 class C motor home for $1,900.00, put $3,000.00 into it and have a fine new way to get away. They used to tent camp but enough rocks in the back will diminish ones desire to camp at all. But now they are living in luxury. Also met a couple from Minnesota camping in a tent along the creek, they have a motorcycle and trailer. Just loving the experience, they're young.
After coffee watching the creek I decided to pack the car and go through Bear Tooth Pass and into Yellowstone. Oscar came with me and was so excited to be included he jumped right up in the car and away we went. I was advised to wait til mid-morning so the sun could warm the air way up there in the mountains, I did and brought a sweat shirt too.
The day was stunning,
brilliant sun, clear skies and no breeze. I had all kinds of plans for my time up there including spending some time in Yellowstone. It took me 4 hours to get to Cooke City and I was tired and hungry. It seems that I stopped at every overlook, took pictures of the view then went in search of different types of wildflowers. The flowers were abundant, colorful, and different with the change in altitude and exposure to sun. Many pictures.
I saw no wildlife, at least the 4 legged kind, but there sure were lots of bikers. This must be the next best thing to do after Daytona bike week. The road would be really fun to drive on a bike, it's curvy, uphill and down but you have to keep putting jackets on then taking them off. All I did was roll up the windows or roll them down. The road is narrow so if you don't pay attention for one second you could be flying off into oblivion. No guardrails. At one point I was above the snow still on the mountains and definitely above the timber line. The air smelled so good, pure and scented with
the alpine flowers.
While in Cooke City I had lunch and was able to take Oscar because I had a table outside, it was way too hot to leave him in the car. I sat next to a couple from Phoenix, AZ with a 10 yr old girl and they were on the road for 5 weeks. They said they come to the mountains to get away from the heat of AZ. Good for them.
I was rejuvenated after lunch so continued into Yellowstone but drove only about 10 miles into the park, I was getting too tired and knew I had the long drive back through the Pass again.
Going back was easier because the light was fading and all wrong for pictures so I wasn't compelled to stop. Oscar was now 2 hours late for his dinner and still being an angel but I knew it wouldn't last. We made to the campground and he got his dinner one minute shy of dying from starvation. I had a real need for Mexican and found out about a great place in town 2 miles away. It was a great place and I sat at a table
outside and watched the world go by. There were 2 kids dressed in their pj's and I asked it they were going to a slumber party. "Well no, we're going to the movies". I guess if they fall asleep in the movie it's easier to get them into bed. The movie was Inside Out and seemed to be very popular.
I left town and came back home, settled in and now it's blog time. Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed taking them.
This has to be one of THE most beautiful drives in the world.
