First European road trip – destination Italian coast line!

We decided a long weekend was a great excuse to see a bit more of Europe. Murray was offered a house on the Italian coast by a colleague. Didn’t have to ask me twice!

Half a tank of diesel in our people mover, 150Euros in road/tunnel tolls, travelling through Mount Blanc tunnel an 11km tunnel one of the longest in the world I’m told, many many tunnels later, and we arrived at Sportorno a bay south of Genoa, we wind up from the beach into hilly mountains, the streets get narrower, I’m using my imaginary break more than I have ever in our entire marriage. Tiny roads, sheer drops, our big car. It was a little scary, I was happy when we arrived safely.

The beach was a little shocking! We are use to having more space to ourselves on the beach, Italians not only sunbathe they sun-stand. Babies/toddlers were without swimsuits, girls without tops, ladies mostly in bikinis, men in skimpy swimming costumes. We were easy to spot as our kids were the only ones with rash shirts on, and we had by far the whitest bodies on the beach! The water was a beautiful temperature, and on the second day it seemed to be more normal sitting so close to people you could read what they were reading. We were even offered some coffee from the thermos of a new friend I made in the water.

We drove a little further along the coastline and enjoyed taking in the rock faces, random castle type buildings built into the rocks, busy beaches, and beautiful flowers.

We enjoyed pizza and gelato, and generally had a lovely time chilling out.

It's back to work for Murray, as the kids and I prepare for a string of visitors.
