"Paris is always a good idea." - Audrey Hepburn
What an incredible first day in Paris. (We will gloss over the trip. Long, my feet look like they belong to someone else, and I no longer have ankles.)
Pre-booking our ride into the city from the airport worked well and as we walked out of the airport baggage claim, the Air France bus stop was right there. Perfect. We love the transit lanes on the highway which mean the bus never gets stuck in traffic, and there is something about getting off the bus right in front of L'Arc de Triomphe that says "Here it is. You've arrived in Paris!"
The Hornung girls had breakfast waiting for us when we arrived at the apartment in a new part of town for us - the 16th. While the apartment itself is nothing special, the terrace view along the Seine with Sacre Coeur in the distance, the Tour Eiffel across the river, and the barges floating past as we ate breakfast was so spectacular it was hard to tear ourselves away. But the city beckoned.
We walked miles and miles, across the Pont Bir Hakeim (which, by the way,
is a great spot for perfect photographs of people with the tower behind and the bridge featured in the movie "Inception"), through the Champ de Mars and across the 7th arrondissement to Invalides for a look at that glorious golden dome and the Pont Neuf, my favourite bridge in Paris.
We shopped for fruit, cheese, cake and bread on Rue Cler and stopped for a quick lunch at a Café on the way back. Somehow, 3 soft boiled eggs, bread and jambon seem elegant when they are served the way Paris does it!
Tonight we are off to Versailles on the train, so our picnic is all organised - a quick nap might, however be in order.....
