Our Family
Ryan, Lory, Brittany, Alan, Sara, Cory, Sandy & Bow No cooking? I'll go anywhere, anytime. Fortunately, our daughter, Lory, invited us down for chicken bar-b-que last Sunday. Wish you could have had some. Jay was helping cook the chicken for a local church's fund raiser. It was a delicious bar-b-que. It came with beans, potato salad, roll and a brownie. And it was even extra nice because all the Knapps were there....except for Jay who was still cooking. He said they cooked @ 365 chickens. We have this on-going discussion with Sam & Sandy: do you like barbecue? After our last cruise, Sam repeatedly inquired about this as we headed home from a wonderful, sea-faring trip. He had a favorite restaurant (Woody's) in mind and really wanted to go there. But being the polite gentleman he is, he kind of works his ways mysteriously and carefully. We explained what we liked and didn't like regarding bar-b-que: we don't care for barbecue that is done with all that gooey sauce found on ribs and chickens (barbecue chicken) - gag. We love chicken bar-b-que's. Cooked on big racks over a big open grill pit. The sauce is a thin, spicy, vinagry like sauce....not thick, red and gooey. It is smeared on the
chicken by paint bushes. We all march to the tune of a different drummer and our drummer doesn't like gooey sauce. We ended up stopping at Woody's because we couldn't tell if it was a tear on Sam's face or drool. Luck be with us.....they had chicken bar-b-que like we liked it. The entire menu was excellent so if you see a Woody's on your travels: STOP. Sam is a very good predictor of good restaurants and he followed through with his expertise. How do you like your chicken? We've had about 4 chicken bar-b-que's since returning home and none of them have I had to cook.....yippee. Makes them even more delectable.
After filling our stomachs, we took the family photo. Last time, Ryan and Jay had left before I got my IPad out so they weren't in my last photo. Still no Jay cause he was still cooking the chickens. Next time. We decided we needed to walk off some of the yummy bar-b-que so we strolled (should have run but still too stiff from that racing marathon we were in at the mental asylum) around the block from the Knapp's house to the Main Street. A local

Red, gooey sauce...yuck! couple has opened up a new, little shop called Allegany Arts and Antiquities.....Stones & Bones. Jack (owner) has his own stuff: taxidermy, carvings, and other earthly treasures in the store. He has also opened the rest into a co-op for others to sell their treasured wares. Recently, he opened up the place attached to this building into an ice cream shop. It used to be the old post office. It was fun to look around and chat. Didn't buy anything although we were tempted..but remember: we are trying to get out if the business! I have to keep reminding ourselves or we would be scarfing up everything we think is neat. We did have ice cream...I had hot fudge put on my sundae...yum! Scratch the exercise walk. Only added more calories! Rats! It was a very nice day!
Jay's grandmother died May 19th. She was a lovely woman and so spry and alert. She was another person I begged to take to a carnival so the barker could try and guess her age.....and we would win every time. She was 95 and looked 70. Sandy Foreman is my other specimen of who I want to take to the carnival.
We would truly win....she wins and we split the prize 50/50 cause it's my idea. They had a lunch following the funeral but we had some errands and ended up going to the local diner for a late lunch. Got my tuna melt, again....good but we all know nothing compares to the Earl of Sandwich. Just suck it up and be grateful for what I have, I tell myself.
Thursday, was grave decorating day. I put all my artificial flowers in order. Cory gets his leaf blower, weed eater, cleaning supplies and water. We do two cemeteries. My parents, grandparents and great-grandparents are in the first one. This is a very large cemetery in Hornell, NY. The workers kind of try to take care of the grounds but they aren't manicured like I would like them to be....a far cry from it. I've written numerous letters to the cemetery board but I always get the same answer: no money and not enough staff. Perpetual care means nothing. So we do our own landscaping work. When my grandmother, my mother and my 2 aunts did the graves...the really did and dug them! They would dig the entire grave surface completely
Shop at night
Sidewalk Sale at shop and plant real flowers all over it. They looked like a Queen's perfect, overflowing flower garden when done. Me: I stick some artificial flowers into the ground or attach an artificial swag to the top of the gravestone. I think they would say it was okay...I hope so anyway. My 2 aunts, 2 uncles and 1 cousin and her son are buried in the second cemetery in Howard, NY. It is a much smaller cemetery so is more easily maintained. More artificial posies. I tell them all I can't come back often enough to keep real flowers thriving.....I think they all said OK. Fake is fine!
And in between, we went with our daughter, Kim, when she got a pacemaker. I put a notice of that on Facebook which most of you saw because we read and appreciated all your kind words and thoughts. Kim is doing very well...some incisional pain but that is expected. She has to limit the use of her left arm so her incision will heal and the two leads will imbed correctly into the heart muscle. She is only 48 years old but ended up with what is called sick sinus syndrome. Her pulse

Not like the Earl's ran between 30-40. Sleeping, it would drop into the 20's sometime. No cause of why this happened to her so the doctor is just saying it is idiopathic (unknown cause). She and Haley (granddaughter) are coming down on Monday. Haley takes a photography class in school and has to take some pictures of old antiques. NO...she is not taking pictures of Cory & me! I just knew you were saying that...I just knew! We have some nice, interesting pieces she can photograph.
Today, we sorted out some of our larger items to load into our trailer. We have taken a second booth in our Salamanca Co-Op to put some of the larger items in.....hoping to sell them all. Oh, what dreamers we are! But we have to try cause remember: we are trying to get out of the business. Dream, Dream, Dream.
Well, I was only going to talk about the chicken bar-b-que and somehow got carried away somewhere along this chatter channel. Once I have your attention I hate to let it go. May Memorial Day bring a day of reflection and relaxation......and chicken bar-b-ques. That's what we are having....Yum! You are all welcome to join us.
Lulu will be there.....she doesn't eat much, though. More for you. ???
