Jared's birthday picnic and bike rideJared's birthday picnic and bike rideJared's birthday picnic and bike ride

After a sausage sizzle and play in the park it was time for a bike ride.
The previous blog post was embarrassingly behind-the-times so instead of doing a broadcast publish, we have posted it on the website for those who are interested. To view it simply click on "Previous Entry" at the bottom of this edition.

The weather had not improved with our move across to Adelaide. We actually stayed in Gawler and visited the family every now and then, but especially for Jared’s 4th birthday and Mothers’ Day. We also made several visits to the amazing Barossa Valley in between "work days" when Peter was installing the diesel heater we purchased at the CMCA rally. It was a comical sight seeing him with his head and shoulders in buried deep in the bottom bathroom cupboard. It took a bit of doing and a lot of organisation but it is a wonderful feeling to have a warm van at the touch of a button. However, 3 nights later, at the press of a button......nothing! Argh! After a phone call to the distributor we have arranged to have a replacement part sent to us. Fingers crossed!

We were lucky enough to stay for one night with friends of friends at their 150 year old restored general

When Penny and David bought this land it was being used for grazing. They had it reclassified and now grow several types of grapes for their winery.
store, cum winery in the Eden Valley (just east of Barossa Valley). David and Penny have passionately been making amazing quality wines for 20 years, but the winery, the house and some building sites are up for sale. It's time for another chapter in their lives.

After attending the Barossa Valley Farmers' Market to purchase some wonderful fresh produce and cheeses, we made our way to Maggie Beer's Farm Shop. My, oh my, what a great experience that was. All of Maggie's wares are available for tasting and it was a gastronomic heaven. While there we discovered that cooking demonstrations are held each afternoon. Of course, since we were in the area.....

After leaving the Adelaide area we headed for the Murray River again. We stayed on the river bank at Swan Reach and while other people huddled around small camp fires, we were snug and warm in our van with our new diesel heater chugging quietly. The weather was still cold and miserable but the scenery is amazing. As we travelled we occasionally stopped to take photos or grab a geocache. As we travelled east the weather improved and as we write this we are sitting in

David and Penny have created a lovely family home in this National Trust building.
glorious warm sunshine in Berri, on the banks of the Murray again, in a beautiful campground. We love the Riverland area. It's the fruit growing capital for the nation. So many orange trees and grape vines.....so why do we import oranges from elsewhere???? There are houseboats and paddle steamers along the banks in every little and big settlement. Oh how we wish we still had our kayak!

Peter visited the doctor in Berri as he had been coughing for a few weeks and it didn’t seem to be getting any better. 2 types of antibiotic were prescribed and it was strongly suggested that further tests be done to rule out any possible recurrence of past nasties. We put our Murray River rambling on hold and decided to make our way back to Horsham for blood tests and anything else that might need to happen. We are still confident that we will be able to fulfil our commitment for one week’s work at Werribee South Caravan Park, and then the Central Coast beckons us back.

PS Test results are back and all is well.

The grapevines are actually planted in holes that have been blasted into the rocky ground. The views are amazing and we were there right on sunset.

All he has to do is determine where and how it will fit into the van.

The surroundings are relaxing so we took a walk around the "lake" whilst waiting for the shop to open. It was freezing cold outside so we were grateful that there was a fire warming the shop.

This painting was an Archibald Prize entry some years back. It won the people's choice award. Maggie didn't conduct the cooking demonstration but Peter did get a glimpse of her sneaking in the back door during our morning visit. Wendy just caught a glimpse of the top of her head!

Yes it was cold, but lovely. Sad too because this is where and when we said our goodbyes to the kids.

Good to hear all is OK with Peter's tests. We called in to Maggie Beer's place on our way over, really enjoyed it...well worth the visit. Cheers Jan & Merv
