After leaving Hobart and heading for Kingston we drove to Franklin to the wooden boat centre where the smell of wood varnish was all pervading. Beautiful hand built boats were in various stages of construction. Then we dropped into Geeveston a small ' forest town' to post a few cards. I think we were probably the only people there that the post mistress didn't know by name. We wandered around the town and its park and dropped in for coffee at a little cafe sheltering under a canopy of trees. is a lovely compact liitle town with a fascinating heritage centre where we learnt all about the logging industry and forestry business. Then onto the forest to a tree top 'air walk' perched high up the rain forest canopy of trees at a place called Tahune which is Aborigine for 'peaceful place of running water'. It was a lovely mild day with very little breeze... so ideal for walking over the swinging bridges that look down on the rivers Picton and Huon. We walked up to the air walk then along the river banks for over2 hours. We had only driven about 25 miles into the forest but it stretches right into the Hartz mountains and across to west coast of Tasmania which is about a further 100 miles...it is an enormous forest wilderness and a world heritage site.
We stayed on there for a late lunch and drove back late afternoon. We've certainly had our exercise today!
