Round Robin Quilt - Sonia's Reveal
Thank you all for all of the comments on the 2 quilts so far! We are really enjoying sharing our project with you all! A point of note, as any of us make comments about the other quilts that we have worked on, near the bottom of the blog there is a "Previous Entry" and an "Next Entry" button that you can scroll back and forth if you need to have a visual reference of what we are talking about.
It's Sonia's turn! Her quilt has something very unique that I wish I had thought of! She asked all of us to not only participate in the quilt itself, but also to add some of our thoughts of what family means to us in writing.
And Sonia said ....
"I am the second in the line of the sisters and I am the "odd" man out. It is a joke in my family that I am adopted. If you can't tell in the pictures all my sisters have very dark brown/black hair and dark eyes. I have green eyes and lighter hair (partially
The package!
This is what went with each quilt as it moved along. All of the fabric and the quilt as it was in progress. This is what Shasta got when it was her turn. Sometimes we met at Mom's to exchange, sometime we mailed it. enhanced!!). I am also probably the quietest of the sisters, which is saying something!!
I have done quite a few quilts and they are all, what most quilters would say, traditional. So, when Shasta said something about a Round Robin I was on board for the project but was sacred to death that my ideas would be too traditional for my sisters. I didn't want to be the one to mess up their quilts.
And then as I tried to decide what to do with my center block I surprised even myself with picking something that had to be appliqued!!!! I have never done any applique!!! I had a calendar that I liked with birds and different sayings and decided why not. Yellow is my favorite color and I had been wanting to do a yellow, gray, black and white quilt, so again I said "why not"!!
Shasta's comment - Once we had an idea that we were really going to do this, we had to come up with our fabric. Sonia and I got a lot of our fabric from a great fabric store in Crossville, TN called Little Blessings. I think Sonia also bought some of her fabric from Keepsakes Quilting, an online store with a mail catalog. Tammy ordered all of her fabric as a bundle of coordinating prints and colors (cheaters way out? or Wise man's way? ha!) Tonya mentioned in her blog where she got her fabric, and I will have to check with Mom to see where she got her and will put in her blog when her time comes.
The center block has a nest of four birds, or as Tonya called them, "hotdogs" which are supposed to represent four sisters. Then two parental birds looking over them on branches with flowers. The center block says "Family means" and the rest of my family was supposed to write their thoughts on the quilt borders. So I boxed it up and shipped it off to sister number one!!
I knew immediately what I wanted to do on Tonya's quilt, it needed some applique but Tonya is the applique queen!! and again I had never done needle turn applique. Never the less I started sewing vines and leafs and it turned out better than I thought. I am not
Sonia's finished Center piece
Shasta says "Of all of the quilts, this one took me by the most surprise because it was so NOT what we expected from Sonia." sure I will be doing much applique in the future!!!
Tammy's quilt center and what Tonya had added played to my strength!! Traditional piecing!! I usually hand piece and hand quilt my projects but since I knew my sisters and mom would be doing their on the machine I used the sewing machine. But I still used a tradition pinwheels border for Tammy's.
I actually got the idea for my Mom's border from the cover of a magazine I saw for sale in one of the quilting books. I drew a picture of it and then cut it up into pieces for the pattern. I thought I had it all figured out until I got to opposite corners!!! I had to hang it on my wall and just look at it for several days. I called the sisters several times and sent pictures and we bounced ideas round and round until finally a solution to the corner problem was found.
Shasta's quilt border was a total accident. I had thought about it for several days and had no idea! Then I was in my sewing room rearranging the fabric and checking
Shasta's part
Sadly, by accident ALL of Shasta's pictures of her PROCESS was deleted! But the idea was a mosaic pattern that turned out really good. the size of the pieces to see how much was left, since I was the last to get her quilt I didn't have as much fabric left. As I laid the fabric out in long strips the solution was right there. Strips!!! And then I lost my mind again!! and decided to add some applique blocks!! What was I thinking, I finished her quilt the night before Christmas Eve!!!!
One of the hardest parts of the whole process was not knowing what they were doing on my quilt!! They would make comments like "you are not going to believe what Mama did to your quilt" or "I love what Tammy did to your quilt". The suspense was awful!!
Would I do it again, Absolutely!! It is now my most loved quilt!! I am planning on repainting my bedroom and designing around this quilt (don't tell David).
My family is the greatest blessing in my life. They are my rock and I would not be able to accomplish anything without their love, support and encouragement. I know they will always be there for me and I plan to always be there for
Shasta says ...
Family means "Loved and being Loved" them!

I love the stories!
The quilt is beautiful but so are the stories behind what each sections represents. I will be sad when the last quilt is posted but I hope all of you will be doing another and let "us bystanders" look on.
