Tonya's 1st Look
It's just so much to take in at one time! Round Robin Quilt - Tonya's Reveal
As we move to the second quilt, and before I pass the mike to Tonya, I have a couple of things to add to the previous blog that people have asked about. Keep the questions coming! We are loving the comments!
To know who did which section, each of us signed our name and date on the bottom of the section that we completed.
None of them are quilted yet. We each will decide how to quilt them ourselves. Unless of course we get the idea to have a quilting bee! MMM? Not a bad idea?
No, we did not have any pattern in mind when we started, we just winged it as the notion hit us!
If you see anything written in italics that is me adding something in.
To see the quilt pictures even better, once you finish reading the text, click on any picture and you will be able to see them full screen and scroll through them one at a time. There are many more pictures than text so make sure to scroll ALL the way down to see all of the pictures.
And now I turn it over to Tonya.
"Okay, I am going to be honest about my first thoughts on this round robin thing. But let me preface my very honest statement, by saying this first. I am the last of the five of us to become a quilter. So needless to say, I don’t have many under my belt and well let’s be even more honest, some of those are still not quilted.
My mom and all my sisters do amazing work and I am the newbie to this quilt world. I have never been critical of my work, well because it’s mine. But this was a different story altogether. My very own ideas (no pattern to go by?) and work combined with theirs was – insert honest statement here- SCAREY!
When I would start to think about it I would get so excited about having a quilt that they had all worked on, and then anxiety would set in. I still had to work on theirs. Well, obviously I couldn’t say no, so the only other thing to do, was get started.
I had just helped my
Sonia gets Started
Sonia decided she was going to do hand needle turn applique .... so she started with a vine ... mom and sister work on a log cabin and really loved how easy it was to manipulate the colors like artwork. With the help of our local “Simply Southern” quilt shop and their annual sale, I found the perfect batiks.
I love batiks because they are so forgiving. (When I first started quilting, I kept sewing the wrong sides up…see why I love batiks?). I also had picked up this pattern from the quilt shop and actually thought when I bought it..”this will probably never get done”..ha. I remembered it had a tree on it and thought it would be a perfect center for my “family tree” quilt.
I never once gave a second thought to my quilt. I knew from experience if my family worked on it, it would turn out perfect! And after finally getting Tammy’s round done (literally the night before the deadline) the rest was really fun.
I don’t have a quilt wall, but I do have a camera. So I would lay out the patterns and take pictures with different fabrics and patterns. I think it works better for me because I can flip through the pictures and
And she sewed leaf after leaf after leaf ... it was perfect for the Family Tree theme!pick the one that pops out at me.
Measure, measure, measure! We were all working with fabrics that weren’t ours, and had no idea where they came from.
(So there's no way to run out and buy more if we cut it wrong!) So I measured lots to make sure I didn’t really mess up! I wanted to incorporate patterns that were different than what I had ever seen, ambitious to say the least to a novice quilter. But nothing was too good for my family, so when it wasn’t working out, I went to moms! (next door)
I guess the hardest part was not leaking any information about the quilts to their owners. We kept taking pictures, but couldn’t share them! It is an experience I would tell anyone to try!
On the day of the big reveal, I don’t think I was expecting to be so emotional. It was liking seeing an heirloom that had been long lost or something. I first remember thinking it is so colorful and cheery.
And like Tam said, it’s not anything anyone can put into words to describe the pride and love we have within our family! I
Shasta's turn
As is the case with most projects, Shasta starts with a drawing. In this case, it ended up being more of a design used in Mom's turn than this round. learned so much while working on this and yes ... I will do another one. Next time with no hesitation!
Everyone knows at my house…if the house catches on fire…grab the quilt!

Tree of Life!
I love batiks too! And these are breath taking! Love the center "tree of life" and all the applique vein/leaves ...and I really think the "little" border with gold and little triangles are perfect! And the outer border, oh my! Perfection! Again...looking forward to seeing this quilted! Looking for quilt #3
