so my first impressions of Buenos aires?

Very very different to new zealand to say the least. have been here nearly a week now and am adjusting to life well. this is one of those frustrating blogs where there is too much to say i dont even know where to start. Home for now is a wicked little hostel right in the centre of town, quite a few locals live here then some americasn, isralies, australians, peruvians..... A good mix. a few of the argentinians dont speak english either which is great becasue i have no choice but to try adn use my spanish.

Speaking of spanish, i now have 8 hours of classes behind me. Learning french at school is helping a lot but it´s going to be a very long journey! on the plane over here i was imagining arriving and going to buy some food, not being able to speak the lingo so it would all be very difficult, but me and the man (who of course would be very handsome) behind the counter would have a good laugh about it....then everyday i would return and impress him with my amazing improvements and in the end we´d have long conversations and laugh at when i couldnt speak spanish. Something close to this little day dream has happened, although the man is not quite the south american hunk i was imagining...more a fat old man but everyday i speak a few more words to him which amuses him no end. Although of course embarrasing mistakes have been made...... amazing how just a small word in the wrong place can change so much. For intance it took me five days to figure out that instead of saying ´pleased to meet you´when meeting a new person i´ve actaully been saying...i love you. This does explain a few of the reactions i´ve got over the last few days!!!!

Of course have had some great nights out. I went to see a film with josh, my room mate, the advertised film was cancelled so we ended up watching a bond film!! Josh had never seen one before so i forced him to watch of course. As we left the cinema the previously quiet entrance hall was full of people dressed very very well, glasses of wine were on every surface and waitresses were dishing out champagne everywhere, so it would have been rude not to stay for a while 😊 . When i imagined my life in buenos aires i never imagined i´d be in a art gallery sipping free champers! Beautiful models were circulating, impeccably dressed and sipping on wine before being photographed and moving on to the next party, it was all very sex in the city like! Josh can actually speak spanish unlike me so we got a chance to meet some locals.....so the conversation went - them: hola. me: hola. them: pleased to meet you claire. me: i love you too. at the time i was very proud of my attempts at conversation. luckily they were gay so it didnt matter!

I´ve mostly become nocturnal since being here, nobody goes to bed before 4 am, i´ve seen the sunrise before going to sleep on most days. I´ve eaten more empanadas ( kind of cornish pasty) than i can count and finally had tasted the famous argentinian steak - very very good.

So in short i am having a great time here, i cant wait to improve my spanish more so i can respond without having to have everything repeated for me. And of course to impress my fat old bar man! I have made some good friends here and everyone looks out for one another, i´m being very careful with my things but in general i feel safe here. Of course i wont become complacent, but dont worry too much about me really i´m fine!

Got to do my homework now! Not managed to get round to photos yet i´m afraid, one step at a time! love claire x
