Believe it or not, Great Cockup is the name of the fell we hiked up today. So far the weather has dictated hiking on alternate (dry) days, which works well for me as I've done very little walking so far this year. Despite my lack of 'training', the biggest problem is following the directions in our guide book which are open to various interpretations. First of all today we had to figure out that Horsemoor Hills appears to consist of one farm. Next, the green path we were to take that slanted to the left read as though it came after Dash Falls when in fact it came before and the signpost was only a post lacking a sign. Other questions arose such as exactly which broad grassy break in the heather was the correct one (bearing in mind that the guidebook was first printed in 1998 so it's possible that the gaps in the heather may have moved especially if the route has not been re-checked between printings), and do references to a gill and a beck both refer to the only stream visible and the only one marked on the OS map? On other walks, distances and compass points would help greatly in clarifying the route to be taken, and it would be helpful if any closed area signs were posted at the beginning of the walk instead of two thirds of the way round.

Despite these niggles, it's a joy to be walking the fells. There was a cold wind at the top of Great Cockup but we could see for miles and miles across hamlets and green hills to Bassenthwaite and beyond.
