So this is the palaces at Versailles. Fortunately, we are idiots and went on the only day that it is closed. Thus, we got a pretty good look at the gardens and at Marie Antoinette's little hamlet. Also, do not go to Versailles on a monday.

This picture shows a very distorted perspective of the gardens here. In reality they go off very far on both the left and the right, and the end of the longer pool is what seems like a mile away. Pretty freakin sweet.

Fountain of Neptune

This is a fountain the sculptures of which are Neptune and his cronies emerging from the sea in a chariot. Supposedly it looks even cooler when you go and the fountains are turned on. Either way its pretty great.

Marie Antoinette was not very enthusiastic about life at the palaces, so her husband had a little village and a park built for her. It seems very out of place because all the architechture is very whimsical and the gardens are semi naturalistic, whereas the rest of the place is very orderly and grandiose.

Here is some of the hamlet for Marie from afar.

It's me.

This is one of the buildings in the hamlet. Notice how Dr. Suess is the architect.

I think that this house is where Marie spent her time. It was hard to tell because it was poorly labelled and I don't read French.

Thanks!
It's SO nice to see your faces in addition to the great pictures and explanations. You were smart to stay for Mass at Notre Dame. That's the perfect way to get a real sense of time and of all the history that place has seen. The catacombs are too creepy for me but I'm thrilled to see the pictures. I would have just gone down, taken a couple of pictures and come right up. What a place for foul play! I'm looking forward to pictures from Vienna: where you live, where you study, what your faces look like in Vienna...............
