Town HallTown HallTown Hall

The most famous Gothic style Town Hall in the world.
We have arrived in Belgium in the University town of Leuven. Leuven is called the City of Beer. A hundred years ago the city boasted no fewer than 788 different drinking establishments. It is home to the largest brewery in the country and also the smallest.
It has the "longest bar in the Europe" in Oude Markt.

The impressive Town Hall dates back to 1439. The 236 statues have been in the niches since 1850, which means they have survived two world wars,

So we were met at the train station by a friend of the owners whose apartment we are staying in for the week. Magda walked us to our new "home" which is a very nice third floor apartment on the main street of town. The owners are at their main home in France. They will be going to our house next summer. Magda showed us around the home and then invited us to her house for dinner on Thursday. What a great welcome to the pretty town of Leuven.

After settling in we went for a little walk. We just had to see the longest bar. It really is a street lined with many bars. And tonight the street was packed with people getting ready to watch the world soccer cup game - Belgium/U.S.A. There are big screen televisions set up all over town. No one will be missing this game. We decided to watch the game from home. It might not be good to hang out with the locals tonight.

By the way the title of today's blog is the title of a movie Jerry and I saw on our first date 45 years ago!
