Still here in Thompson preparing for my trip physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially. I don't know what to expect. They say 'be flexible'. I think that is definitely one of my strengths. I'm not sure what to expect from a country with a difficult history. I've done some reading on the subject, and I can actually understand an attitude that says 'Just because you have a lot of support, you can't tell us what we can or can't do'. I don't know how 'developed' it is. Is it like Guatemala where the really poor people had low levels of education and lived in shacks with aluminum roofs and dirt floors? Or would it be similar to Korea with more modernization but some very conservative traditions and values (like it was OK for men to hold hands with men friends but men and women didn't really hold hands)? Something tells me that it will be like neither of those. I'm a little bit nervous about my professional expectations and duties. I'm comfortable with different ages and abilities of students. But, offering suggestions to elementary teachers that can be working with a ratio of up to 80:1 in their classrooms. I feel like I better have some good ideas and suggestions to share with them. It's different too the idea of going overseas now as opposed to when I was younger. I was open and adventurous then, and I feel more cautious now. I'm psyched to see the landscape and meet the people. Will they be uncomplicated and happy like the people of Guatemala seemed to be? Or more reserved and nationalistic like I found most people in Korea to be? It will be exciting discovering the answer to some of these musings.
