I was fortunate enough to get to experience Sun City through work. Maties tennis were playing in a tournament and I had managed to tag on to their tournament.
We flew out of Cape Town early on Thursday morning so were in Sun City by lunch time. Im not sure what I was expecting and I'm not sure what I think about the place now.
For those who have been to Disney or Vegas then you may be slightly disappointed. While you have to remember your in a 3rd world country you still kind of expect something!
As far as I can work out Sun City resort is plotted along one fairly straight road. As you enter in under the Mickey type barriers there is crocodile world. Didn't go there. Then you pass one of the 5 hotels, then the casino, then the Gary Player Country Club, tennis courts and another hotel with bars and pools. Further up the road is Valley of the Waves then Lost City golf club and the Palace Hotel and then there was our home!! The Vacation club, which were self catering apartments on a complex, with a pool, bar and shop near
by.
All these facilities were linked with a bus, not decorated with mickey!!!!
The team were to be playing in a small tournament against Free State University and Tuks, can't remember where their from, so they had games Friday through Sunday. Matches started at 8 and finished when they finished. on the Friday our guys didn't finish till 6!!! A long day.
The staff, so me and 2 others watched the tennis till around 9 and then headed off to the Gary Player Golf course for a round of golf.
Im not going to lie, my game was awful, my only excuse was that I hadn't picked up a club since before christmas. The course itself was lovely, beautiful fairways and rough that was very testing. If your ball went in there then firstly you had to find it as the grass stood a good 5cm from the ground, under the green blades were the brown roots!!! You had to chip with all you had and just hope that you got it to the fairway.
We had decided that we would play a stableford and carry our points over to the next round on Sunday.
I scored 7 on the front 9, not loosing 1 ball. and 17 on the back 9 still not loosing a ball!!! my swing came and went but we all had fun and the caddies were good fun and even though I hadn't had one, carried my own bag, they all helped me out.
so the first R150 went to one of the guys.
After the golf we returned to the tennis courts and watched the mixed doubles before we all headed off for dinner.
Saturday was another early start, 8am on the tennis courts were we spent all day, cheering the players on and taking photos. I was allowed to go explore Sun City and took myself off to valley of the waves, Not with my swimmers but just to have a look. I sat and had a beer on the man made beach and took in the sights of people enjoying themselves. Then returned to the tennis courts to watch the doubles and mixed doubles.
on the evening a couple of us went on safari to the Pilensburg Game Reserve. You travel on those safari busses you always see in the photos,
already a new experience.
Sunday was the last day of tennis and a vital match. We were booked to play the Lost City golf course at 12:30, we had no idea how to get there!!!
We watched the ladies secure a good start to the game, winning 3 out of the 4 games.
The lost city is a very good course, id say it was a little bit like a nobility course. There were tiered tees, fairways that went off at right angles, bunkers, water features, a crocodile pit and a ravine. Its the sort of course that makes you think about the club you choose and where you want to place the ball. Just like the Gary Player, the greens were a work of art to read!
120 meters was i think the shortest hole for the ladies and on several of the tees one of us had to go off in the golf cart to find out where the hole was or to help give the line!!
My game had returned to. I was hitting the ball beautifully, my 8 iron of the par 3s was getting within 5 meters of the pin.
I was making a come back.
We finished the round in DUSK! they do warn you it may take 5 1/2 hours to get round!!!
