Spring Training

Spring Training, Day 3:

We left Detroit in a snow storm and arrived in Tampa and caught a bus to Lakeland. Tonight things kicked off with an orientation that included hearing from Lou Whitaker, Willie Horton, Jake Wood, Steve Kemp, Darrell Evans, and more. OK, if you are not a baseball fan that is not going to mean a lot to you, but check out the photos of Jake Wood, Sweet Lou, and yep, that is me with Willie Horton!

We then carpooled over to Tigers Spring Training camp and were treated to a barbeque in the same dining room the Tigers eat in during camp. Teams were then announced, I am on Team 1 coached by Jack Kemp and Mike Maroth.

Back to the hotel and the parties are on. Hung around telling jokes with Darrell Evans and talking with Jon Warden. Jon made the big league team on April 10, 1968 as a relief pitcher and ended his career on October 10, 1968 when the Tigers won the World Series. Very funny guy!

Tomorrow we get our uniforms and have some clinics in the morning and play our first game tomorrow afternoon. Rain is predicted, but who cares!

The Boys of 68 and 84
Lou, Willie, Jake Wood and Darrell Evans on the first day! You can come home now, Frank Bolling. And Steve Kemp too who slipped off to the White Sox in exchange for Chet Lemon and gave us the true center fielder we needed. Can't wait for more.
