Up early and on our way to the Mekong Delta - a four hour drive away.

Arrived Can Tho and boarded the Dragon Eyes boat. We have been upgraded to this boat which only has two cabins - so four quests on board, and five staff. Beautiful wooden boat, built in Vietnam just two years ago. Softer bed - yippee!!!

Had beautiful lunch on the top deck as we sailed up the main river and then turned off into one of the many many canals that bisect this area. Very lush vegetation behind which are the rice paddy fields and the food bowl of SE Asia. The river is full of all sorts of boats - little fishing boats to large barges and transport boats. Water hyacinth floating down the river as well. Colour of the water is a lovely biege/brown colour. Unfortunately there is quite a bit of rubbish in it as well.

Were taken ashore for a walk around a small village - through there market place - where we saw lots of fresh fruits and vegetables together with the fish and other things they get out of the river. Saw some fighting cocks (which is illegal here in Vietnam, but supposedly they take them over to Cambodia for the fighting). Watched some local boys fishing in what looked like a sewer full of black mud -but they had a few fish, crabs and snails.

Had romantic dinner under the stars on board the boat. The other people on board are a mother and daughter who are travel journalists from Germany, so are getting the star treatment ( which I think we are benefitting from too).

Next day were taken on a smaller boat, and then onto a small rowing boat to be taken around a small island village. Then went on bite ride around Cai Be and then viewed the floating markets.

Left the group here and were taken by mini van to Chau Doc (about 200kms away but it takes about 4hours as they only travel at about 50-60kms/hr.

We are now in the flashest hotel in town, right on the riverbank and our first chance to have a swim in a swimming pool. Relaxed back with a couple of cocktails and enjoyed the scenery. Reminiscing on our last 14 days in Vietnam.

Tomorrow we travel by speed boat up the Mekong to Phnom Penh.
