Pretty impressive This will be a short blog just to let you know we're back on the road again. We left Brighton on Thanksgiving morning and only had to circle back home once when I realized I'd left my phone on the kitchen counter. Everything else we've forgotten is being sent to us by Kristin - the camera for instance! We took I-69 to I -65 to avoid some storms in the mountains and by the time we were in Indiana we had sun and slightly warmer temps.
Our first stop was Huntsville, Alabama, so we could visit the U.S. Space and Rocket Center . There are more than 1,500 artifacts from The US space program on exhibit. This is also the place that hosts Space Camp for kids and adults; our daughter-in-law, Tracy, is an alumni of that program. The museum is hosting a Da Vinci Exhibition through March 2, 2014. Many of Da Vinci's drawings were made into machines and there was lots of hands on stuff to try. Also an analysis of the Mona Lisa was on display - fascinating stuff.
We then headed to Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama. We were
Mona Lisa
This was really an interesting look at Mona. It showed her actual color at the time of painting. Turns out Da Vinci was a bit obsessed with her. here last year also and decided to try a longer stay. It was nice to set up our little home and get ready to stay for a month. We went to a small shop called Lartigue's on the first day so Ron could pick up more of their famous hot sauce called "Butt Fire" and a pound of steamed shrimp - Life is Good.
So far we hooked up with a bike riding group that rides 3 times a week. The first ride was 5 miles to a restaurant where 19 of us spent 1 1/2 hours over lunch and then rode back. Great bunch of people and very friendly, but not exactly the exercise we were looking for. We'll try the group again and see how it goes.
Aaron was here in Alabama with Ron on a hunting trip in November and gave me a heads up on a word that is frequently used here - it has come in handy -the word is "yawntoo" which means 'Do you want to' - thanks Aaron.
We took a drive to the city of Fairhope - about 35 miles from camp. It
is on Mobile Bay and reminded us so much of Petosky but with a few wrought iron railed balconies so it also had a touch of New Orleans too. Someone suggested we have lunch at Andre's which is a bakery and café and they had Muffaletta Sandwiches on the menu - as good s New Orleans.
All is going well - A word of caution to other RVers. Ron said we burned out our water heater because when he winterized the camper he forgot to switch off the electric heater part. When we plugged in at home to pack up, it automatically came on - this isn't a problem when there is water in the tank, but since it was still winterized there was no water. Anyway, Ron figured out what happened and order 2 new elements. One of them is already heating up water and the other one is a spare. We tend not to learn from our mistakes the first time around.
Be sure to check out Ron's picture of a Cottonmouth that was right on the bike trail. Guess who crouched right down next to it to get a picture -
Cottonmouth
Also known as a water moccasin. It was just a baby according to Ron. I was so worried he'd get bit and not be able to fix the water heater.

I'm very happy Ron was able to fix your water heater after the Cottonmouth photo-op.
