Ya know, if life really is a beach then why do so many people hate their life? I love the beach! I was so excited to find myself swimming in the Pacific Ocean on the shores of Salina, Ecuador.
SATURDAY (8-5)
We all woke up early to head off to the beach! Our destination was Salinas, though we had to change the plans a little since Sra. Loyola got hurt by reckless guy on a bicycle and ended up injuring her knees and legs pretty badly. So Srta Lupe came to keep Sra Loyola company while Dorita, Sr Loyola, and I took off for the beach. Sr Loyola had a cold (even though he denies it, it was a cold!) so Dorita drove and I sat in the front with her while Sr Loyola rested in the back seat. It was a quite a long drive, though many little different towns.
First, of course, home of the finca, we went through Chongon. We continued on our way through Lomaquil, El Consuelo, Cristal, Cerecita, and into La Camarona, a tourist location. Next was Progreso, El Tun Tun, Olmedo, Sucre, Zapotal, Rio Verde, Santa Elena, La Libertad, and
finally into SALINAS!
What a beautiful beach, as you can see. The water was gorgeious and even though to the natives the water is freezing it was warm to me! Even though I didn´t actually go swimming on the beaches of Salina, I would have if we had more time. Instead Dorita and I went on a boat tour out at sea. It was so amazing! Since it was only us and another couple on the boat, we got to sit up in the very front, which was kind of scary. Espcially if the captian kicked it and the front of the boat (us included) wasn´t even touching the water! Dorita kept her eyes shut, but I pulled my hair down streched my legs out in front of me and raised my arms up like on a rollercoaster and took in the beauty. That is, until I saw a huge wave coming right for us! It looked like a green/blue wall we were about to smash. Which is exactly what happened. That was the only time I felt it necessary to hold on the rails on the side.
For the rest of the boat ride I sat in
the very front where the point comes with my legs hangin´ off the side. A little shark tease, ya know? I talked to every boat we passed by. Before we got back to shore, we came across an American family. You can just tell by looking...
Turns out this family was from South Carolina and the guy I talked to seemed to be shock when I told him I was dear ol´ Virginia. They were traveling everywhere on their sailboat. I was so jealous! They´d gone from country to country. Just came from New Zealand! I wish I could´ve gotten to talk to him more, but I didn´t want the captain and the other couple to be sitting ducks in the boat. (haha)
Well we got back to shore and found Sr Loyola back at the car putting the things he bought away. We all climbed in and headed down the street to eat. I was so excited. I love seafood! I had a great shrimp salad and plate of shrimp with rice annnnddd we all split a crab. Sr Loyola fixed me a crab salad inside the head of the crab. It was great!
After our
bellies were full we headed out for the road again. This time our destination was down Ruta del Sol. A road right off the beaches going through different towns is a basic definition of Ruta del Sol. First beach we passed through was Cullaype. Then through Punta Blanca, San Pablo, Monteverde, Jambeli, Palmar,Valdivia, Libertador Bolivar, and a little into Montañita before turning around. We picked up a few things on the way back from the little stores along the road. We finally stopped at San Pablo where I got to swim and soak up some sun. It was great!
When we were all ready to go we hit the road back to Guayaquil. Along the way back home we stopped to eat. A meal of rice and goat meat. I liked the rice best...
We finally made it back home right as it was getting dark. What a day! I can´t wait till the day I return to such a beautiful city! Beautiful!
SUNDAY (8-6)
Well I´d like to congradulate my brother and his wife for being married for one year today! But more importantly, I´d like to say happy birthday to my
sweet grandfather, Papa! What a special day.
It was off to a slow start, though, this special day. We slept in, deciding that attending the late church service would be best.
By the time everyone was up, ready, and had eaten their breakfasts we headed out to the market place to pick up some food. I know I´ll miss market places when I´m back in the States. I still can´t deal with the raw meat, but I´ll learn to. Dorita tried to win the lottery a couple times while we there even though I told her it was just a waste of money. While we were piling into the car a guy came up and asked if we wanted any lottery tickets so I replied for Dorita "NO!" though Sr. Loyola wanted to give it a shot...and guess what?! He lost. What a surprise.
Our next stop was Mall del Sol, where we dropped off a Sr. Loyola´s church robes to be tatooed up. Then we headed to MegaMaxi for the rest of the weekly groceries and along the way I got to see the new airport, José Joaquín de Olmedo, and it is beautiful! But so
is Simon Bolivar...
Well we got the groceries home and into the fridge but before I got fold up the bags I was rushed out to the car by Sr. Loyola so we could all go eat. We had a great lunch of tender steak, potatoes, and salchichas. Right across the street from my favorite resturant, For You. There´s so many good things to eat here! Well we couldn´t finish everything so put all our leftovers on one plate and took it with us. They believe in not wasting an expensive meal; I believe in not wasting a crumb! Sometimes, it goes to show...
We came back home to rest up and finish putting the bags away before it was time to go to church. Before then, though, we needed to pick up the robes at Mall del Sol.
When we got to Mall del Sol the robes weren´t ready. Finally one was...though the other was going to be a little while longer. we were going to be late and with a priest in the family we just could not do that! So Dorita and I stayed behind to wait for the robe while they went on to church. At least half the family was there. Better yet, the half the had the priest who was lecturing! Besides it wasn´t so bad for Dorita and I; we got a nice big glass of Coco Rico. And we enjoyed every last sip!
By 6, 30 minutes after service began, we were in a cab and on our way to the church. During the service I kept thinking "this is my last time here...amongst all these Catholics in this church of gold" And even though I felt weird at times, I´m going to miss it! What a beautiful church filled with beautiful people. God bless them!
Until next time,
Shir
