I have been to a number of beach resorts, in India as well as the South East Asia, but there are few places which match the beauty of this place. Had been to this place in February 2005. Was travelling with a group of 10 friends. I was based out of Mumbai at then. We had to bunk respective office for a couple of days to make our escape.
The journey wasn't so great. Had to take a train on the Konkan railway from Mumbai to a place called Kudal. From there we had to take taxis to Tarkarli. The pot-holed road went up and down on the Indian coastal countryside. Tarkarli is a very small place on the Maharashtra Goa border and has a MTDC resort as a only decent place of accomodation. The road lead straight into the resort.
The moment we entered...and behold. The sight in front of us was a sight of a lifetime. I am uploading some photograhs from the trip.
The resort boasts of a private beach with golden sands and blue waters. We were accomodated in luxury cottages. We spent the the first day lazing on hammocks laid out for the travellers on the
beach.
We started off early next day to a place called as sangam. We had to take a boat on an adjoining river which flows into the sea. We went down the river to the point where it met the sea. What a sight !!! One could actually sea the muddy water into the blue sea. It was a sight not to be forgotten. We headed straight for the sea on the same boat and landed on a secluded island in the middle of the sea. It was a golden piece of land in the middle of the blue seas. It was evening by the time we got back to the resort.
On the final day of the trip, we explored the Tarkarli town and the neighbouring Sindhudurg. The place has the name coz Shivaji, one of the great maratha warriors, built this fort in the middle of the ocean. There is no connection to land. It is amazing how he ever got to get that made. It is said that it was the only fort which was made by Shivaji, all others were captured by him. One has to take a boat to get to this fort since it
is seperated from land. Anyway, the speciality of the fort is that it is made of sandstone and tar. It is said if a cannon ever hit the fort, it could make a hole at best on the walls. However that hole would get immediately filled in by the melting tar from the surrounding area. Awesome concept !!
We left back for Mumbai the same evening after a very eventful weekend.
You can go to this place all around the year but the journey during the monsoon months, June to August, could be difficult. Do write in for further details.
Cheers

Seems like a great place. How far is it from mumbai? Would driving to Tarkarli from mumbai be a good thing to do?
