A Dose of Outside
A Dose of Outside is intended to share a bit of nature with you as experienced on my local hikes and other adventures. Take a moment to look out the window or step outside and see what it is you see. What you smell. Notice what’s growing around you. Use all your senses and really get A Dose of Outside!
HIKE DATE: August 24, 2013, Sonoma Regional Park Today was a day of chores. Finally I’m finished and get around to some food. Uh. Now I’ve overeaten. It happens. Not feeling that great, I glance at the clock. 4:30. There’s still time to get in a walk and no doubt it will make me feel better.
I drag myself out the door and head to the farm. I’m uncomfortable so my “walk” is more like a slow waddle with frequent stops. I’m bird watching! That’s it!
A woman jogger passes me. She’s probably wondering what’s wrong with the poor woman hobbling along the path. She’s wearing shorts, shoes and a tank top. And that’s it! No hat, no water, no camera, no specialized gear swinging from her hips. How does she do it!
Okay so now I’m moving at a snails’ pace along the trail, laughing out loud to myself. So.
I turn right before reaching the water and head up the hill since there is more shade this direction. It’s stiflingly hot, which isn’t helping my “condition”. Taking my time, eventually I reach the top of the
hill and head east towards the twin water towers flanking the northwest corner of the park.
I stop at every bench, every lookout, every few feet to enjoy the scenery and give my body a chance to wake up. I’m feeling a little better with every step!
There are a couple of Robin’s flitting in the trees right in front of me so naturally, I take another break to watch and take pictures.
Turning right I head down the hill, past the small pond. This may be the shortest loop in the park! Hey – a little bit is better than nothing!
Near the bottom of the hill I hear the telltale Tap Tap of woodpeckers and stop to watch. First there is one, then two. Making short work of . . . . a new hole I guess. The tree they are on is littered with holes. Clearly this is a popular hangout.
The two are beautiful together. They stick close to each other. Never more than a foot or two apart, even when one ventures around the opposite site of the tree trunk.
Well, I’ve turned what should be a 20 minute
walk into over an hour, but I must say I feel so much better! A little Dose of Outside goes a long way!
Please feel free to share this blog with anyone you feel might enjoy it.
