After a quite night in Lisbon and resisting the lure of a night out with two
spunky Lisbonites who approached us at the Shopping Centre, Darren and I Shared a taxi to the Grande bus stop where we parted ways after an excellent 8 weeks together.
If you have missed any of our adventures and would like to check them out, please go to:
Darren's Travel Blog From here I caught bus to Ericeira and Darren went onto the airport and London where he is organising accommodation, a job and reuniting with his fabulous girlfriend Mary.
After an hour and a half bus trip I was picked up by a girl called Stef in her Rover. I found out about the Portugal Surf Camp from a guy I met in the surf in Mundaka. While describing the camp he informed me that the cook is a party machine. Well the first thing Stef asked me was if I wanted to go get a beer. I had found my cook.
Shortly we arrived at the surf camp.
Portugal Surf Camp Everyone was down the beach and I recieved a tour of the camp. The camp is located about
10 minutes out of town and feels like a retreat. The house and grounds are beautiful with a pool and hammocks strategically placed around the grounds.
I was soon to discover that the camp was populated by Austrian's and Swiss who were all kind enough to speak English to me and around me most of the time 😊
Hello to all my new surf camp friends. Hope every one is having fun where ever you are.
My two weeks at the camp largely consisted of long hot days on the beach in the Sun, Super Bock Beer, Surf DVD's and the occasional night out.
There was the Local Luna Bar where the lone bar man is the only one makes drinks. He made lots of impressive cocktails.
Then there was Lux, a night club in Lisbon owned by John Malcovich which had a 180 Euro cover charge. Ferdie managed to Negotiate this down to 12.
Although this was an amazing club it was just as memorable for the drive there and back where a 1 hour drive became 3, both ways.
My stay at the surf camp included Video Analysis and coaching from
Martin the boss, super model, great guy and very good surfer. It as was very humbling but also very constructive.
One night we all slept on the beach around a camp fire and were entertained by a fire show thanks to Javie.
The first week I was there was not a lot of swell, but in the Second week the swell picked up to a solid size.
As a result I got the chance to surf the reefs Rubira and Coxos. Lots of fun although it was kinda tricky getting in and out of the water due to the razor sharp rocks and beds of sea urchins. While surfing at Coxos I lost a fin entering the water, so as a result I was surfing a twin fin. Later I was ran over by a crazy local which as a result sliced a section of tail off a borrowed board.
Jack McCoy, legendary surf film maker was touring with his latest movie, “Free as a dog” which although was oddly commentated by a dog had lots of awesome surf footage of Australian Surf beaches and Australian surfer Parko. This was a great night which
carried on into the morning with Reggae bands and DJ.
Sadly the two weeks ended and I was off to London. I could have quite happily stayed all summer.
Thanks to the Gang at Portugal Surf Camp, Martin, Ferdie, Claudia(Surf Dancer Extraordinaire), Norine, Steff and Tommie for making my stay the best.
