Now the fourth generation of the Taylor family have their own bedrooms here!
We are so lucky to have been invited to Cape Cod for quite a special weekend. Our great, long-time friends, Doc & Paula Taylor, hosted us at their lovely “Cape House” in Menauhant near East Falmouth, Massachusetts as they have countless times over the years.

The major highlight of our most recent weekend was the “Menauhant & More House Tour” which benefited a local historic gem, Highfield Hall & Gardens. Doc and Paula were the Honorary Co-Chairs and did a fabulous job. The details including air conditioned busses and cold bottles of water (it happened to be pretty hot and humid) were superb.

Since Paula was busy with her own event related assignments, Doc was our personal docent. He added technical and historic aspects of the area and the homes on the tour from his perspective as a summer resident of Menauhant since infancy and as a consultant to a local contractor.

You might want to mark your "tickler file" and nab this event next year. It’s always held in mid-July and features different Falmouth neighborhoods each year. While the 2014 version

won’t be the fab and historic Menauhant community; it promises, by tradition, to be splendid! The tour visited 10 sites including the Grace Memorial Chapel, the summer colony’s Arts & Crafts style ecumenical place of worship. At either end of the spectrum of sleek new construction and carefully wrought renovation projects is a unified feeling of preserving an iconic "cedar and stonework" tradition. The Taylors own “Cape House” has been in the family as a summer home for generations and has been lovingly transitioned to a year round home with Doc’s amazing "wood craft skills and Paul’s amazing style and patience.

The Falmouth area is gorgeous. Mid July is peak season for hydrangeas, whose mostly bright blue hue clash brilliantly with orange and yellow day lilies. The sandy soil and sea air really treat these perennials well. Visual it’s an artsy study of sun, sand, whitecaps, wild flowers, billowing grasses, mottled shade, and cape houses with turrets, widows peaks, faux (and real) light houses and deep porches.

Menauhant is one of those "tony/casual" summer enclaves that is easy on the eye and full of

fun with tennis courts, sailing, several beaches; and a long list of parties, tournaments, regattas and more to keep the home owners and occasional renters happily busy and busily happy. Other than the house tour, we were treated to a private party in one of the featured tour homes, had dinner on the dock at Captain Kidd’s Restaurant in nearby Woods Hole, went shopping in sweet little Falmouth (which is right up there with Niagara on the Lake and Saratoga Springs in the charm department), took a boat ride in Doc’s fifty year old wooden Lyman inboard, enjoyed a lobster & steak feast at the Menauhant Yacht Club, and visited with family and friend of the Taylors whom we had known for years from Cape visits and ski trips with our combined families.

The only drawback that we find regarding the Cape at peak season is a bit of bridge traffic getting to and fro. Rest assured, the slowdown is well worth it and is long forgotten before the ice melts in the first vodka and tonic.

Thanks for a great weekend, Doc & Paula. Oh, we love the Cape in all seasons, and hope to get back there when Paula chairs a holiday event at Highfield Hall! Tally ho!

Cape Cod
The flowers were beautiful on the Cape. I saw some of the purplist (is that a word?) hydrangeas. Some of the homes in Provincetown had so many flowers there was no yard. Looked very English to me.

We lived in Falmouth
In 2011 we lived there for 6 months during the winter. You should go back and read some of our blogs. We had a great time and I loved walking down to the water every day.
