Cyprus - basking in sunshine and history

Lynne and I have spent a couple of weeks resting and relaxing on this wonderful island where the weather has been perfect, although it is now hotting up, and the people are so friendly and helpful. We have been staying at a villa near the coastal town of Latchi which is on the North West point of West Cyprus. Both Latchi and the nearby town of Polis have a fair selection of decent restaurants and I must say Trip Advisor has been very helpful in locating the best.

Most of the time has been spent relaxing around the pool at the villa and I am now on my 5th book. A swim between chapters is most refreshing.However we have not been completely lazy and we have had a few trips out in the car (which is a Skoda) to the historic remains near to or at Paphos and into the surrounding hills.

We have ticked the following off the list;


• Tomb of the Kings - a system of caves and rock tombs dating back to 3rd century BC and 3rd century AD
• Agia Kyriaki - 12th century stone church
• Kato Pafos archaeological park - Roman remains including floor mosaics going back 2000 years
• Medieval castle - once used by the British to store salt and keep prisoners
• The picturesque church of St George at Agios Georgios
• Baths of Aphrodite - a pool in a grotto where it is said Aphrodite met her lover Adonis.


Over the years the island of Cyprus, lying at the crossroads of the eastern Mediterranean, has long been a prize coveted by its near neighbours such as Egypt, Rome, Greece, Venice and Turkey and they have all left their mark in one way or the other.
