Ramada Hotel Pool
Looking out to sea We have spent the last week of our trip relaxing at the Ramada Hotel in Khao Lak and tomorrow we set off for the long trip home. This past week has been free of temples, palaces and river trips and in their place we have had plenty of sea, sand and Singha beer. As such there is not much to "write home about" although there are a few snippets you might be interested in.

The West Europeans (excluding Brits) and the sunbeds. I would say that there are probably more West Europeans, and in particular Germans, here at the hotel than any other nationality and as you can imagine with their presence there could be a problem with the "bagging" of sunbeds especially as the hotel is next to the beach. The hotel has sought to address this problem by putting up notices in English and German stating that the reserving of sunbeds is not allowed. They also have a sunbed officer whose job it is to prevent the "bagging" of sunbeds. However there is a loophole and the trick is to get up at 7.00am, when the sunbed officer starts his duties, and encourage him to prepare a
couple of sunbeds for you by putting up the umbrella and laying out towels. You then leave a couple of books on the sunbeds and go back off to bed. Problem solved. By about 9.00am most of the sunbeds in the best positions have been prepared by the sunbed officer for "his clients" and there is trouble if you try to move somebody else's towel and trespass on their sunbed.

The local restaurants Great Thai food at all the local restaurants with many varieties of rice and noodle dishes. At lunch we have been to the local beach restaurant and had a couple of beers and a rice or noodle dish all for the grand sum of about £8. In the evenings we generally went into the town and tried several of the excellent Thai restaurants where the total bill usually comes to no more than £18. Pleased to report no Delhi belly or anything like that.

The 2004 Tsunami Khao Lak was badly affected by the tsunami that occurred on Boxing Day 2004. The site of our hotel at the time was covered with beach huts that were completely destroyed. In their place the hotel was built and needless
to say there is an evacuation procedure and lots of notices in place. Our evacuation point is the roof of our building, being more than the height of the tsunami, and I tried the route out the other day only to find the door to the roof was locked. Hopefully the man with the key is about when they sound the warning!!! For those keen film buffs the film "The Impossible", which is a story about the tsunami was filmed at Khao Lak.
Well that is it as far as blogs are concerned on this trip and I hope you have all enjoyed them.
