Blackhouse Livin'

Hello!!

We've had a very interesting past few days. We took the ferry to the Isle of Lewis on Monday morning. We spent one night here in the main 'city' Stornoway. I was pretty tiny here and not much to do at all (except drinking at the local pub of course - which is what we did). The next morning we headed out to the western part of this Island. We saw the Arnol Blackhouse Museum and the Callanish Standing Stones, then we headed out to our Blackhouse hostel. There were a few other couples on our bus planning on staying there for the night - since Alex and I knew that there were limited spots (and no pre-booking) it was a huge, merciless race to claim a bed - I think Alex might have even tripped an old lady (just kidding). Everyone ended getting a bed but (FYI) we got there first!
The hostel was in a little Blackhouse Village (about 7-8 blackhouses total) right next to the ocean... so beautiful! We spent lots of time walking along the rocky coasts dodging sheep poop!
We also have a shameful little secret to share with you - Alex discovered a pair of socks in the bottom of his bag that hadn't been worn since we left home - so we spent a good 5 minutes smelling them! I know it sounds gross - but it smelt like home... mmmm clean Canadian laundry.
The island was definitely the furthest away from home we felt (even though it was actually the closest). We both experienced a bit of a culture shock! The geography was unlike anything in Canada and the 'towns' were so tiny with old abandoned Blackhouses everywhere and sheep like crazy. But we're back in Stornoway now - and it feels like we're in the 'big city'!
Tomorrow we're headed back to Inverness on the Ferry. Still haven't figured out how we're going to get pictures on here - but rest assured we are working on it (and have about 400 pictures to choose from!)

P.S. Jo - fortunately we have yet to come across any Campbells, and therefore no bar fights for Alex!

We miss you guys! Can't wait to come home, but don't want to leave here... I have an idea - why don't all of you guys come here and then everyone is happy!! 😊

Love,
Tamara and Alex
