Well then, I am writing you from a cruising altitude of 37001 ft at 514mph somewhere over Moldova, (historically the most entertaining of all the Eurovision nations). The journey into the unknown and thusfar, in my life at least, unexplored far reaches of the world. Even now as I sit on this Boeing 777 British Airways BA153, only vaguely do I realise that this epic voyage has begun. Watching the range of in flight movies on offer to me, which at the moment of writing is Lincoln, it seems a very strange and distant concept that in about 5 hours I will be in India!

Up to this point, things have been going well. After the manic preparations of the last 3 days, paying the price for not doing enough before. Ho hum. We started out from Northampton (lovely town) at 5.45, doing a speed scarcely slower than what I am currently doing thanks to Mr. Wilson! Heathrow T5 was a pleasant enough place, as far as airports go, the only slight mishap being due Amelia's bladder making me extremely anxious that we would miss our flight. I will incur her displeasure if I fail to elaborate on this, so I will explain fully, at another time.

I must say that Lincoln is a tremendously good film. However, as is often the case with such emotionally charged films, it has led me to a rather lofty consideration of what this journey "is". Just a big holiday because you're only young once, a spirit of adventure or because I won't get a proper holiday again for a good few years? Or perhaps a a chance to escape the mire of everyday life at Bureau Veritas (my erstwhile employer), an escape from the pressures of rent payments, a crap flat in north London, and to consider what the hell to do with my life when I get back? As always, a bit of both, but the latter dawned on me at a later date than the former.

However, I feel this may be getting a tad to much “long dark tea time of the soul” for a first introductory blog entry from me. Must be all the free wine. God bless British Airways!
