Our Maui camper vans
ready for the first day's drive Wow - being with a tour company that has up to three events often scheduled on the same day is exhausting. However, it’s also wonderfully interesting, informative, adventurous, exciting and fun, but still exhausting. I think this is the first evening that we’ve had a bit of down time, so here it is already a week later and I’ve hardly got started telling you what we’ve done. It’s already Wednesday, 10th April but the day of the week doesn’t mean much to us any more. The thing is, we don’t keep up this hectic pace usually and having an 08:00 briefing on driving days, or going out to eat in the evening after a day’s outing takes some energy. It’s keeping us fit though, which is a real bonus.
It’s not just about what we do or where we go, it’s about the country and the people and we’ve fallen in love with New Zealand and have found the people friendly and helpful wherever we’ve gone.
The countryside that we’ve seen so far is beautiful; at first we passed fields surrounded by tall trees planted so close together that they’ve been cut into long, high hedges; pampas grass growing
Railroad Crossing
a new sign for us wild along the roadsides; cute locomotive signs indicating rail track crossings; many river bridges with dry beds or a trickle of water; distant mountains; thousands of sheep in enclosed fields and herds upon herds of cattle. The deer, which were introduced at some point in the late 19th century, became so prevalent that many of them are now farmed and this tender venison, named “cervina”, is often served in restaurants. Open season for deer hunting is 365 days of the year here.
