The car is sold. The house is sold. Remaining possessions are in storage. Goodbyes have been said. The final hometown meal has been eaten. Now I wait as the night passes until my morning flight to New York. Twelve hours from now I will step onto a plane and be homeless, rootless, and free. The song says, “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.” I don’t agree with the hippy.

I have a lot to lose. I’ll lose compounding interest on my retirement and cash assets. A romance I am trying to maintain will probably be lost in the shuffle of my travels. I’ll lose precious months pursuing the next steps in my career. And I’ll lose equity in my sold real estate investment. In reality, freedom means being willing to lose, not merely having nothing. Those with nothing are not free to do as they will. Those that are free to do what they will err on the side of protecting what they have to the suffocation of their freedom.

traveling light... I hope this is all I need.
I didn’t count myself among this class of aristocrats. Turns out a large portion of my bucket list will be checked with far less invested cash than I ever expected. I always expected that I would be employed for the rest of my life. Never in my dreams did I imagine a world where being unemployed and homeless facilitated the freedom to pursue my goals. The cliche of letting go of the ground in order to fly tastes sour in my mouth, much like a teenager admitting his parents were right. I feel like Herman Hesse just slapped me in the face and I like it.

Saint Patrick’s Day in New York... here I come.
