We spent the night on Caye Caulker which is a Belize island. It was maybe a 45 minute boat ride from Belize City. The only vehicles here are golf carts or motorcycles and there are lots of bicycles. We had breakfast at the sand box when we arrived, the floor was sand, it was cute and had a beautiful view of the ocean. The food was good, we then checked into the Miramar hotel which also has an amazing view of the ocean. It's only $12.50 US per night for each of us. Our room is simple, a bed, chair, "table" and a fan. We share a bathroom with the rest of the guests which does have a hot shower. Our room is upstairs which makes the view of the ocean all the more beautiful. I think most Americans would not want to stay here but It's all we need. I like waking up to all the sounds of people in the street, so many languages. Creole sounds very interesting and the dreadlocks on these guys amaze me. I saw a guy riding his bike and his locks were so long that he had them tucked into his back pocket presumably so that they didn't get caught in the bike wheel. There are people from all over the world here. So far we have seen a ton of Australians, we made friends with a couple from New Zealand, met some people from Oregon and Montana, France, Belgium, Holland, Denmark and Canada. The island is so small you can't help but see the same people. I have been shocked how many people are traveling for longer periods of time. It just isn't as common in the states but they seem to simply take a sabbatical. All the foreigners are traveling at least 3 months. The Americans we met are only traveling for a week and one woman for 3 weeks, quite the contrast to everyone else. While at the lazy lizard, a bar on the edge of the island yesterday an Australian was fishing and when he caught fish he would take it off the hook and hold it in the air, then enormous birds would swoop down and take it out of his hand, it was awesome to watch. He went thru 4 fish I think while we were there. We laid on a cement wall and watched pipe fish and other pretty fish swim by. It was happy hour, the rum and cokes were $1.50 each with a tasty fresh lime in them. The island was split in two a few years ago during a hurricane. I swam across to channel to the other side with some random woman who offered to "take" me. I was breathing a little heavy when we got to the other side and feeling out of shape. I think I'll be in shape very quickly though. My legs are already sore from all the walking. We walked along the beach on as much as the island as we were able to. The trail was full of water in places and we just couldn't get thru. There were crab pieces all over and lots of lizards. Some strange ant hive things too in the trees, coconuts all over. You have to watch out for those things! Apparently they can kill you if they fall on your head. We also came across a shell with a live hermit crab in it, so cute! Today we saw something that looked like a leemar, I have no idea what it actually was but it was moving fast! Last night there was karaoke at the Oceanside night club, we had a lot of fun there. I think the crowd favorite of the songs Dan sung was Fat Bottom Girls by Queen. Everyone seemed to know it. There was a woman who sang a song in Spanish she had a beautiful voice, it was a treat to hear her sing. When we were bored we got drinks to go and went to the beach with our new kiwi friends. It was a great night! This morning we awoke to the power being out on the whole island. We had a big bottle of water that we filled yesterday so we weren't really effected too much and we were still able to get breakfast. We headed to the beach but it started to rain so we went back to the hotel and had some nice down time. What an amazing time I am having =)
