On the first and second of November is the day of the kites and the day of the dead. They believe kites are a way of connecting with their loved ones whom have passed away.

So on this day a bunch of volunteers from the volunteer house I live at went to a city about a half an hour out of Antigua to visit a cemetery. It toke us three chicken buses and one shuttle van to get us there. But we were sure to make that remember able! The cemeteries here are nothing like in the United States. They are full of color and life, which is weird to say because it’s a cemetery… but I don’t think I have ever seen so many colors in one place! These days are dedicated to the diseased. The families come to their burial site and cover it with flowers, pine needles, Incense etc… It’s truly beautiful! I don’t think any of my pictures did it justice. And they spend all day at the cemetery flying kites and being with their loved ones. It seems they only focus on the life they had not the death they received. I think it’s a great way of going about death. I am truly jealous.

The other part of this day is that a bunch of different clubs and organizations make these HUGE kites only out of tissue paper… and each kite have their own them. Like the Mayan calendar or the day of the dead. These huge kites were set up on this dirt soccer field. They covered about half of it too! On the other half there was food and cloth stands. Kite stands and I even saw some lady selling turtles! I will never forget this experience it is one for the books!😊)

Hi Joseygirl. Did you fly a kite for Paul? Wrote in your guestbook when you first posted but it did not appear. Flying the kites sounds wonderful. Maybe next year for Paul we can do that. Love you Sweetheart, keep posting. Grandma
