Edit Blog Post
We just had a delicious lunch so after writing this blog l shouldn’t be too hungry.
Our motto is: “you have to eat so it might as well be good!”
Cooking is like solving a puzzle, see what ingredients and spices go together and prepare it. The best part is eating it!
Hubert and l love to cook together, we both have our designated cooking places and it works fine. He used to cook the meat (while we were still on Atkins diet) and l am the Spice Queen. Also we love to deep fry food and Hubert is in charge of that too.
In the morning when we are sipping our coffee we start talking about what’s for lunch. Thinking of what we have in the fridge and pantry and if we need to go shopping for anything.
Living in Panama is an advantage for buying cheap, local, organic fresh fruits and vegetables and of course all the coffee they produce here.
Hubert makes our coffee in the morning. We buy the local coffee beans and grind them so we have fresh
brewed coffee every morning, so tasteful.
Back to the food.
In downtown Boquete we found an organic store, the name says it already right? Only organic products and a big variety of whole grains for whatever you want to bake and don’t forget the organic chocolate made in the northern part of the province of Chiriqui by the local Indians who live there.
There is also a Deli where they have all the cheeses you can imagine! Yes, me being Dutch l cannot live without cheese. Of course they have other special food products like sauerkraut, crackers and grains. The first time l walked in there my jaw dropped to the floor. Wow! all these wonderful items that we couldn’t find in Costa Rica, like four different kinds of pita bread.
Then there are the other supermarkets where we find our regular supplies, like rice, beans, chickpeas, soy drinks, coffee, olives etc.
Across from one of the supermarkets is a “Mercado”, like a farmer’s market where locals sell their fruits and veggies. It’s a small building but the first time you go in there it’s
like a maze. We go there frequently and found two people in different locations who sell good products, not rotten or about to turn bad. Very friendly people and we always have a chat and ask about fruits that we don’t know of.
Like the “tomate de arbol”, it looks like an egg shaped plum and when you peel and cut it, it looks like a red kiwi. They taste really good, just like that with some splenda or in a fruit salad.
For those who don’t know it yet, we are now vegetarians.
A whole new world opened up for us with all the food that we can now eat again, like pasta, rice and bread. Also it’s like when you quit smoking, everything tastes so good!
And then our neighbors started a business of making, guess what?
Yep, sausages and sliced cooked ham, other pieces of thick ham and pate.
The neighbors are French and have been living in Mozambique for seven years and we get along really well. We all love to cook and every time we get together
we try to impress each other with different types of food. We love it.
We told them that we were still going to taste the food they are going to make, since we have been their official “Food tasters” for a few months already.
So, everybody who comes visit us: “You HAVE to taste their sausages and pate and oh well everything” it is very tasteful and delicious. We found some nice organic bread that goes well with the pate, we’re ready to feed our guests.
One time we pulled over next to a road where a guy was selling huge bags with all kinds of vegetables in it. The price? Only $ 6.00 and it lasted a good three weeks.
And then on top of everything they opened a new store on the road going to town, not too far from us. It’s called “food box” which is a perfect name for a small square building where they sell food. The owners are very friendly and asked us to tell them what we would like to buy that we can’t find in town. We brought many wrappers
from cans and empty cardboard boxes, also some Dutch, you never know.
Now we are searching the internet for vegetarian recipes and oh boy there are thousands…..no millions….help!
Well, l can talk about food forever, as some of my friends well know, but l guess two pages is a lot to read already, so enjoy the pictures and we may come back with : Food – Part Two
Enjoy your meal!

lekker eten
