Pennelope's spot
Moody Beach campground Moody Beach, Maine
It’s 8 pm and I’m exhausted! Oscar is already buried somewhere in the blankets.
We started out slowly, the weather was overcast and in the 40’s so who wants to go to the beach and freeze. We did the big loop in the campground, leisurely had breakfast , then secured Pennelope and took off for the visitors center that I had spotted yesterday.
They had a couple of nature walks that I couldn’t pass up but first Oscar had to have a run on the beach. We went to Wells Beach that allows dogs this time of year and we found it very inviting. Parking was easy (picture). I got between the lines and only took 2 place.
We walked for over an hour than I got a cup of coffee and my chair and we sat and watched the tide come in.
There was a family playing in the sand and surf much to my amazement. There was a little 3 yr old boy with blond hair wearing nothing but a bathing suit, his skin was purple. It was really cold but kids have no sense. Apparently neither
did the parents.
I had fun photographing the surf and rocks and seagulls despite the fact that there was terrible lighting. We stayed til Oscar cried to leave and then we headed for Perkins Cove.
I was told it was not to be missed.
It turned out to be a really quaint tourist trap/fishing village with lots to see and photograph. Oscar stayed in the camper and I got to stroll around at my leisure. You could go on a REAL lobster boat and see the fisherman pull up his traps or take a sail to a light house. I’m sure there were more options but I just strolled around town.
I talked to a fisherman shoveling mackerel into barrels. He told me they were for lobster trap bait. It is the oil in the fish that attacks the lobster. I took his picture, he gave me a smile. He was a salty dog.
I had fish and chips for lunch, delish, and talked to a couple from NJ whos son is in school near Acadia. I may see them tomorrow as we are both going to a local organic farmers gathering in
Unity, just E of Bangor.
A larger boat came in so someone had to open the pedestrian draw bridge. Yes, the captain asks over the load speaker for someone to push the button to raise the bridge. Good thing some little kid wasn’t on it. Pictures
The sun came out so I went on a walk along the coast and got a nice view and some ok pictures. I treated myself to an ice cream cone, chocolate fudge almond, and slowly walked back to the camper.
I was tired but there was sun and daylight left so I headed south to find a lighthouse I heard about. The gps got me there in no time and the sun was perfect.
I want to figure out how to become a light house keeper. There was no road to this one, you had to get into a basket and be winched across the water. The lighthouse is on a rock island.
As we headed north I decided I had enough fun. It was almost 5 pm when we got to the campground and both of us were exhausted. I parked Pennelope in #
78, took Oscar for a short walk and planned to have a cocktail and relax. But I met a couple from NH who had a pyramid shaped trailer and I just had to see it. They were really nice, he does wood carving, she paints them and pictures of mice on stones.
Oscar and I finally settled in for the night, can’t believe how tired I feel.
By the time I downloaded and edited the 143 pictures I took today and wrote the blog, it’s almost 9 and I can’t wait to get to bed.
