Left Brussels Saturday morning, caught the 10.30 ICE train to Cologne – train was so impressive – cruising at 250Kph – and as much leg room as you wanted and seats for our backpacks (this is how we expected the Eurostar to be).

Arrive in Cologne two hours later which gave us the day in Cologne as we were booked onto the 22.30 sleeper train to Copenhagen. 12 hours was probably a bit generous to spend in Cologne – theres only so many Currywurst Phil can manage.

In typical German fashion – they had an automated luggage storage system in the train station which we think is worth a mention. You stick your bag into the machine – it gives you a ticket – then when your ready to leave you put your ticket back into the machine again and taa daaaaa – your bag magically appears – it really was amazing – or maybe were just easily impressed lol!! Phil said he was going to put me in it lol

Spent the day walking around Cologne, loads of shops but no room in my backpack – how depressing! Walked up the River Rhine which was beautiful – and the weather was great too. A lovely little treat was when walked along the bridge over the Rhine and the whole length of the bridge was covered in padlocks which we found out is a tradition for newly married couples and new borns to put a padlock on the bridge with their name engraved to show their love –how romantic!! Lol we worked out there must have been about 100,000 padlocks on that bridge!

And that was our 12 hours in Cologne….

So twelve hours after arriving we nervously boarded the night train to Copenhagen (didn’t have a clue what to expect)– it was a 6 birth – three beds high at each side of the cabin – we were lucky enough to have the two bottom bunks. The other four beds were already full when we boarded (two guys from Holland heading on a work placement and a French couple) and no room for our backpacks so we had to snuggle in beside our bags . Actually had a really good sleep and woke up about eight. Stood at the window on the corridor and watched Denmark roll past and arrived in Copenhagen about one (two hours late – apparently this is common according to the French couple).

P.s anyone reading this who is planning this trip (or similar) take care of your luggage as the girl in the cabin next to us had our belongings stolen – computer, mobile, visa – heart breaking!! Thank goodness we slept with our bags!!!

Love Phil & Alana x
